I live in the midlands area and generally try to avoid the M6 toll road. While travelling south the other day I noticed that the toll charges sign for motorbikes had all been blanked out??. what would you think?? Well my naive mind thought that the M6toll had come to its senses at last and dropped its charges for motorbikes.

Talking to a mate at my bike club the other night, he told me that he took the bait. He stopped at the barrier and was then asked for ?2.50. When he asked about the bike pricing sign being blanked out he was told that they had done this because ?it was confusing the car drivers?. I can?t help thinking that the motorbike pricing being blanked out is a lot more confusing than a picture of a car with the price by it, I wonder where to M6toll priorities lie??

I noticed the blanked out signs last week on my trip to the Mudlands..
I automatically thought it was now free for Bikes.
Fiddling gits.
I think that if the signs don't show a price, it should be free. but we will see.

I will see if I can find the website for them and fire of 'another' email to be ignored!!!

I am aware that the Motorcycle tarif costs have been removed from the M6 toll signs, but when motorcycles have reached the pay station, they have been made to pay the tarif.
Not only is this confusing, but not having a price displayed for motorcycles gives the impression that they are free ( as MOST other toll roads or bridges are).
Is this a marketing ploy to get more bikes onto the toll road? or, as your staff have said, is it just due to the motorcycle cost signs 'Confusing other motorists'.
Come on M6 toll, lets make it the same for everyone!

See if they answer this one, The last one I sent ( about what regs they use for speeders as its a 'private' road) had a fantastic response... nothing!

The M6 toll site can be found: http://www.m6toll.co.uk/
There is a section where you can leave a message for their customer services.
I've done this, complaining about the removal of the motorcycle toll charges as it give the impression the charge has been waived for motorcycles same as congestion charges.
Might be an idea to get peeps to do the same.

Dont think the owners are making what they thought. They have dropped the prices from when it opened. An HGV is now down to ?7 from nearly ?11. They will have to drop it some more for me to use it though. :loo:

Thought I read somewhere some time ago that the pricing for trucs was part of their policy. They wanted to minimise maintainence costs so wanted to constrain the number of trucks using it by pricing policy.

What they want are the cars (in large numbers) which by and large cause little road damage/repair costs. They're quite happy for the trucks to use the "old" road and sit in queues thus creating more car customers.

Every time I've been going south I've noticed the signs on the M6 will point out congestion and that the toll road is not congested - I've never seen them actually say the M6 is clear!!!

Is it not so that when a retailer displays a price on an item that they have to honour that price, if this is the case then the toll road should be free as the signs say :dunno:

Unfortunately that is no longer law, a retailer can advertise a price for something, you can go in to buy it, he can refuse to sell it to you, withdraw it from sale, then put it back up for sale at a higher price, I found this out when wanting to Buya car from ROBERT BOWETTS HONDA DEALER LEEDS ROAD OSSETT (Wakefield)

Just got this from an M6 Troll person. There you go, you can phone anytime you like. :wank:

Dear Mr

Thank you for your recent enquiry.

?We?ve removed the Class 1 prices from our road signs in order to simplify the pricing information we currently publicize. The vast majority of our customers are Class 2 customers and many had been confused with the previous layout of the signs, which had led to confusion at some toll stations when paying. We advise all customers to check on our website www.m6toll.co.uk or call 0870 850 6262 for full pricing details before they travel. Class 1 travel on the M6 Toll is not free, we?ve just removed reference to them from the signs. This is a temporary measure while we look to implement new signage across our whole route which will benefit all our customers.?

Yours Sincerely

One must consider the average cager cannot see a 1/4 ton motorcycle with rider with headlights blazing..
What chance to the poor little buggers have of seeing a 2 ft high sign with a price on it ?

Thought for a few minutes about the M6 toll response and sent this off to them just to see how they react:

Thanks for the reply. I do wonder if your concerns over motorist?s ability to actually understand the signs are a bit over-reactive.

A very large sign with a picture of the relevant vehicle and the prices next to it. Hmmmm.

I can?t help feeling that if someone can?t understand that then perhaps being in charge of a motor vehicle is not the right place for them.

I?m afraid I cannot agree that potential road users should check your website or ?phone before travelling.

Until this subject came up I had never used your website and would not have done so but for the wish to contact you. I am not personally aware of any other toll road/bridge in Europe that requires that. They all seem to manage to OK.

My concern remains that the signage misleads, had I not been alerted to this by a friend I certainly would, on my next trip, have been ?tricked? into using the toll road believing it to be free for motorcycles as are many other congestion relieving charges. I would have been very, very unhappy to have arrived at a toll booth only to find I had to pay.

May I ask what your policy would be in handling such a situation?

I would suggest that in the case of a toll road the signage represents a legal offer to contract, no price displayed against the vehicle type means that the contract offered to motorcycles does not require payment for use of the service.

A motorcyclist entering the toll road system on the basis of no displayed price is accepting that as the contract.

I would advise you that it is my intention to forward your explanation to the various motorcycle organisations/publications as well as general motoring and media outlets.

Once again thank for your reply but I would ask that you consider the additional questions I have raised and respond.

Wonder what they'll say?

Now there's a thought for a ride out... Block up all the lanes with enough bikes to make them see sense....

If no price is displayed, then no price can be charged.... The biker may not have access to a computer/internet or a phone... So you could hold them up for hours... Nowt the police could do, as they have to Actively say that a charge is payable by a motorcycle (as on the Darford crossing-free). If a charge is not displayed, then a charge cannot be applied.....ie.. An implication cannot be a contract....

Feck em, just do as we do... Filter with extreme predjudice...LOL

Cheers,

Rolfy

PS...Would it be any good to ask TC to have a look at this ??? Just a thought...
