Lion Hotel, Llanbister, Mid Wales

Just been to South and Mid Wales for Easter, wife and I got away for two days on the Blackbird (Kids stayed at wifes Uncles) so we stayed at the Lion Hotel for B&B. ?40 a night for a bedsit that will take 3 people (1double, 1 single bed) Food is excellent and good value, Llanbister is a tiny village (so no night life other than this place) The village is situated on the A483 North of Llandrindod Wells. head North from Llanbister to Newtown for some fantastic bends. No secure parking at the Hotel, but they do have many bikers staying there throughout the year, and they are talking of having cover built for bikes, village is so small and quiet crime is virtually unheard of anyway, and the Hotel is situated away from the main road.

To go for a fantastic ride out from the Hotel, turn left and head South on the A483 to Crossgates, turn right on to the A44 (fast road long bends) at Rhayader go straight over at the clock tower, 100 yards or so turn right for the Vale of Elan, follow that road all the way to Devils Bridge, most of it is single track so not a fast road, but it is very scenic, esp at the Old mine workings (they will be on your right, you wont miss them) Once you get to Devils Bridge they is a Steam railway near there for Train buffs, or turn right and head up to the A44, then turn left for 2 miles and visit the old Silver lead mines (We did that and very good it was esp the trip undergroud!) Or carry on into Aberystwyth, many bikers meet here on a Sunday morning. Or come up from devils Bridge turn right an head back to Ryayder via the A44/A470 fast bends and a very nice 155mph straight!! (Ahem not that I was doing that silly speed officer!) And on to where ever you want to go.

I can verify that there are some fantastic roads in that area, I lived there for 13 years. Anyone wanting info on lesser known twisties, such as Llanwrtyd/Abergwesyn to Lyn Brianne/Tregaron etc, give us a shout.

We are going back ater on this year, for a couple of nights this time, so any info would be welcome from any of you guys, it was the Lion Hotel owner who told us about Vale of Elan, other wise we may have missed that one.

I'll get that maps out to refresh the memory and get back to you on that. The route you took last time was one of our regulars as we lived about 8 miles from Rhayader and the Elan Valley. Devil's bridge was a regular favourite. If you go from there to Aberystwyth, there's also a great pub called the halfway, about halfway there and they will even let you camp in their car park area. They opened the pub to let us have a hot wash in the morning when we did it!

The folk in Mid-Wales are incredibly friendly and helpful too, and security is never much of a problem as crime rates are very low around there.

Drop me an e-mail or PM if I haven't got back to you by the weekend (short-term memory loss is one of the disadvantages of getting older, you know! :neenaw:)

Cheers Hunter, Yep the people all seemed friendly to us, the place was a lot cleaner than Kent, roads quieter and in better condition, perhaps when we come down that way a few of us could meet up for a drink some where??

I will remind you at the weekend mate, mind at 44 I tend to be a bit um er oh yeah forgetful:yo:

Could this route be used if I am heading to Fishgaurd?

Quite a big a detour if you're coming from Hampshire, from the midlands it's a more feasible route. It does depend on how long you want to take to get to Fishguard though.
