This has certainly taken on a life all of its own so much so that we have decided to split it into two threads one for the " gentlemans Pipe And Slippers " leisurely two day amble from Lands end to John O'Groats with the possibility of linking up with Stuartl's Scotland 2004 Run and the other for the return trip to be Known as the BIRD 2004 Four Points Challenge.
This will be a challenging 1300 mile continuous run from Dunnet head near J O'G to Lizard point near Lands end taking in all four furtherest compass points on the UK mainland.
I wiil be looking after the South to North run and Clive and Quiney will be looking after the Four points challenge section.
Quiney is also looking at raising funds For Cystic Fibrosis so all participants are welcome to join in on that angle if they wish.

I am looking at the 17th of June 2004 as a departure date from Lands end arriving at J O'G on the 18th with a rest/preparation day before the Four points Challenge.
As it is very early days yet dates and final routes are subject to change as and when the need arises.

So if you are Looney ..........err adventurous enough to give this a go or perhaps sections of it get you name down coz this wil be the mutha of all ride outs

:yo:

Web site for this event coming soon keep an eye on the threads.

Hi Shrops...............

this one will be the first of two such planned ventures and will hopefully happen within the next 6 weeks the other will be around Summer solstice 2004.

The first will be an exploratory venture over a couple to several days and is not intended to be a high speed blast but more of a look around and learning experience leading up to the second run in 2004 in which I would be doing the same again Northward but will be doing a return trip to Lands End in the daylight hours of one day, either by my self or with any one who is game to give it a try, again this won't be a high speed blast ( at least not the type of speeds that leave you without licence or get you banged up ) but more an endurance event.
keep an eye on the thread as it takes shape over the next week or two.
Cheers,
Skip.

No worries

We (some friends and I) were planning to ride up to John O Groats but we were then heading West over to the Scottish Highlands and riding over by Wester Ross

http://www.buyimage.co.uk/photonet/westcoast/westcoast.html

and then coming back through the Central Hiiglands but certainly if you want some company up to JOG then were up for it and alternatively if your team wish to head West with us then no worris alternatively you turn around and head back either way were good to JOG

JOG

Just to clarrify my position here we would be running up in 2004 sometime after March would be good.

Hi Stuart your run is certainly around the same time frame as my second run and as the route is only very loosely planned and flexible at the moment both runs could end up taking completely different routes so there is plenty of room to consider all possibilities on the run to JOG. It would be great if you could join us on the run up and It is possible some of the others may want to join you on you run back. Lets compare notes over the next couple of weeks all ideas and input is welcome and appreciated.

Hi Clive the summer of 2004 run back to lands end will hopefully be the interesting one I have another agenda as well in that I would like to make it a 1000 miler in less than 24 hours type thingy as well as A & B roads only for an added challenge

 the route chosen is only a rough one at the moment spat out by the route planner given the criteria "avoid motorways like the plague" so there is huge scope and flexibility for change as ideas and the benefit of others experience comes into play.

Your participation in this little adventure would be most welcome as would be your ideas and feedback on all and sundry.

Who says us Southerners dont like to get out and about eh:} :} :}

Four Points

Skippy, Clive looks good.

As indicated above we can sync in with you where we coincide routes on the way up or something like that. I will start a seperate thread for [my] route up to Scotland

Wolfie

Is a lunp
Clive, what is point 2 , cause i thought lands end was west, lowestoft east, lizard point south and dunnet head is north.

skippy do you also count the A1(m) as motorway or A road, cuase a good part of the A1 is motorway in my book as well.

Don't mean to have a go or anything but might be interested meself.

Stuart should be no hassles hooking up somewhere in the sceme of things I will keep an eye out for your thread.

Hi Wolfie, point 2 looks to be where the road meets sea just SW of Portuairk where all the locals look supiciously alike and you can hear the strains of Dueling Banjos in the background :m
sound right Clive ?

Having just travelled the A1(M) on my return from Barnie I'd definetly call it motorway, being a foriegner and all I'll leave the definitions of "points furtherest" to the more Knowlegable local contingent, if this venture has you interested you would be most welcome,

Clive is Billy Gates's finest playing with my head or does your route also take in Kens darkest Londinium

:dunno: Autoroute makes it 1319 miles & 26.5 hours travelling time so our routes must be pretty close to the sameR#?

I know it's early days

in the planning stage, but if it's being done over a few days (as opposed to a fast blast) then Sandra and Quiney are serious contenders.

* As we have a grand-daughter, who has Cystic fibrosis, we would consider using it as a fund raising event for research into that condition - assuming no-one had any objections.

Did you want me to run along side as you pass by shouting words of encouragement?............assuming you pass by that fast...........................
Or maybe organise some refreshments en-route?
Take a few tips from the Iron Butt and Dakar type people and employ the use of a hose, for the boys, so you don't have to stop if you want a leak.
Mind you I wouldn't want to be following you!
Dunno what the girls would do - just make cups of tea as usual????

Quiney I like the fund raiser idea.

Sorry Clive I cant for the life of me make out your route too well on this monitor that looks like someone has rescued from an old 8086 or perhaps it is just failing eyesight :goofy:
I'm certainly looking at doing a continuous run along the lines of an Iron Butt,Rusty Nuts,Southern Cross type thing the next question is south to north or north to south ?

err............ its the work pc mate Ive got a 21" sony attached to mine at home :goofy:

North to south works for me I must say for all of the above reasons that also means I gotta get to Dunnet so I will be doing
an amble over a couple of days from Lands End to get there, that might suit some peeps that dont want to do a continuous run and there is also the possibility of hooking up with Stuart a Co on the way up, this is certainly going to be a big one :-: :lick:

Hi guys.......

Deep respect to you all! It hurts like buggery doing this kind of event, but the feeling of accomplishment is indescribable. Clive is working with Jaws to get a couple of accounts of my long hauls put on the site so that people can get an idea of what's involved, and also Clive's brilliant JOGLE in "one hit" ride report. I've got another 1000 miler on the 'bird coming up on Oct 18th

In the meantime, I'll work through Clive and Skip to provide them with a rider's perspective of the things to take into account and they can sort out what is worthwhile. I think I can help with organisational considerations too. I'll have a word with Lee Hurley, the organiser of the Rusty Nuts and Southern Cross rides in NZ. He's a great guy and I'm sure that he'd be more than happy to offer pointers for running either a 24 hour ride or the longer Southern Cross-type event.

Cheers

Geoff

Cheers mate your contributions will be invaluable in the lead up to the event.
I hope the early preps for the Rusty Nuts are going well.
A report on the Barney run will be heading your way after I finish my shift.
