"Knee sliders" to wear or not to wear?

gypsy

MAN on the PAN
Question for you all ?
Is the wearing of "knee sliders " going to cause you more harm than good ?

Normal road riding doesn't require the use of knee sliders but in an accident are they going to afford some protection to the side of your knees ? or being made of a hard material are they going to form a high spot and could they cause more damage than without ?

Chaos theory mate!
There are so many variables and no two crashes are the same.
It might,it might not.

If you have crash shrooms on ya bike or being made of a hard material are they going to form a high spot and could they cause more damage than without ?

Go figure!

Simple: racers wear them on the track, posers wear them on the road. Not that there is anything wrong in posing of course, init true all the power rangers out there?

About three years ago I had an accident with a Volvo who decided to pull out from a side road and park right in front of me, the problem was i was doing about thirty on a main road at the time, anyway the resultant collision left me with a damaged shoulder, however for several years I had suffered with a floating cartelege in my left knee, the accident cured it (or so I thought) about eighteen months later I started with the most excruciating pain that I had ever experienced in my knee, which meant that whenever I had to stop the bike and put my feet on the floor I would get a very painful jolt and my knee actually gave under the pressure on a couple of occasions. would knee sliders have prevented this? or compounded it?
the pain in my knee appears to be easing gradually but I am still having problems with my shoulder however I hope to be back riding within the next twelve months. (Saw all the bikes on the M1 coming back from Donnington yesterday) :B :B

Dunno m8.....

my sliders came with the suit and are as pristine as they were when I got it 'coz I ride like a woos. From a fashion point of view the whole suit looks better with them, but now I am thinking why the f!"%k do i care what I look like - I'm not a racer so why try to look like one? Now thinking of going for the all black leathers and being real.

As to the effect of injury etc, all I know is that when ya catch yer knee on the garage wall with sliders on it bloody hurts. If you hit something solid at 30mph I would imagine serious damage could be done to the old bones if your sliders are Alpinestars(similar to half a house brick)

Hope we never have to find out..............

Think I'll chuck 'em anyway, then at least if I ever bump into you lot you might not take the piss.

knee sliders are a must, otherwise when i kneel down the crap goes on the slider and not the leather. also can spin round on them when chasing bolts/coins etc on the floor.

In your case Fat Lad - try "Arse Sliders" because with your girth that'll be first thing that touches down!!

When you started I thought; Here we go .... a definitife answer.....then you finish with the same question. You had us all going for a minute! :shooter: :lol: :lol: :lol: my troos have velcro for sliders but as they would be shiny and new I don't wear them on the road. But I will be wearing them next month when I am NOT doing a track day. Buzz :bow:

When I had spare money and did not give a toss if I stuffed the bike ( cos I could just go buy another one ! ) I went thru a couple of sets of sliders a year with ease.. if I was doing track days then more.
Nowadays I have to watch the pennys so decided to remove the sliders and take away the temptation to play silly buggers..
I would personally say that they are not needed for road riding... ( Course, if you get those nice hard placcy ones that sound like a bit of hardboard when they touch down and scrap, you can REALLY make peeps jump who are riding with you ! :p So they do have a certain fun value !! )

Plastic ones for the road for the reasons mentioned by Jaws, leather ones for the track 'cos I love the smell of burning leather in the morning :} :} :}

Don't throw them away, give them to a good home - mine :k

And when they're worn down, you can have them back if you like :rolleyes: :}

SORRY I tend to rant on a bit, I'm missing my bike, & I was hoping someone could say "If you were wearing sliders then your knee would be ok" but obviously nobody can, but if someone can come up with absolute proof that they do more good than harm then I will consider them when I get back on two wheels

Ah, you want to know if they are good armour ( sort of thing ) in the event of an accident...
In that case I would say a fairly emphatic no.
That is not what they are for at all and might even cause more grief than save.

Knee Down

I haven't got my knee down for about 10 years (cep't at Cadwell on a Ducati Experience Day), I think if my knee touches down now Ive fallen off!!! Debating wether to buy a pair for 'skills day' just to see if I can do it again. Have to agree it's mostly pose value as in most (not all) situations, knee down on the road is posy and irresponsible. Having said that, most knee down situations are at very slow speed so one has to ask what is the problem for those who can still do it without a risk to other road users and without a groin strain! Never thought about injury issue. I'm on the fence :dunno: (And I wear all black!!)
