I posted this on 'Touring issues' but perhaps it's also useful here in the Coffee Shop.
We've just finished the weekend trip to Edinburgh and despite it being mid-October, we were as warm as toast.
Prior to the ride I had fitted heated grips for myself and got some heated inner gloves for Sandra.
What a difference! It's amazing what a detrimental effect the cold has on both yourself as a rider and the pillion.
Once your extremities get cold, the body starts to shut down the blood supply and that includes to the brain, dulling your reactions and making you tired.
For the pillion, they also tense-up and this results in them being very stiff.
Have to say it's the best bit of kit I've fitted to the bike! - and a must for anyone doing a lot of distance touring (especially in the cooler months)
The kit that I've fitted is Motrax heated grips and Klan heated inner gloves.
