K1200R - anyone got 9K spare?

Spent Saturday with the Beemer K1200R and the 1200GS. What's been happening at BMW???

If you do one thing this summer, go and book a test ride on the K1200R, (this is the muscle bike, not the 12R/XX/Busa wanna be) Fook me it's incredible. As soon as you sit on it, it senses your weight and then gives you 3 suspension options, Normal - Comfort - or Sport. These can be changed as you ride with a jab of a button on the left bar. Called ESA I think. Neat, and each jab of the button felt like I was riding a totally different machine, confirmed by a read out on the dash. Build quality is second to none, and personally I think it's the most distinctive bike on the road at the moment.

The sales geezer was giving it the big 163 horsepower number, 'the most powerful naked production bike ever'........yeah yeah yeah, it's a beemer mate.

Well fuck me backwards - think the BlackBird pulls hard? I thought my 12R took the piss in the power stakes, but this thing wasn't even run in and being totally straight up I have NEVER felt acceleration like it. I've no idea how close to the redline I got as I could hardly focus, but the thing just kept pulling harder and harder and harder in any gear. I saw one-fifty laid prone on the tank and it had plenty left but you'd never hang on to a naked at much over that for more than about 30 seconds. The whole package blew me away. Couldn't fault it. Want one. Want one. Want one. The ABS is brilliant, the telelever front end - brilliant, adjust your suspension on the move? - brilliant, and did I mention the looks - bad to the bleedin' bone and then some.

Please please please go and book a test ride and have a go on one as a sanity check for me..................is it really as impressive as I thought it was?

don't get me wrong i love my bmws (i've had a few in the past, and i'm currently running a bmw r1100s alongside my bird) but i would wait to see how the bmw's look after a winter before spending 9k on one.

lot of money for a bike that, build quality wise, leaves something to be desired. having said that, if you can afford one of these (including bmw servicing costs!)you've probably got enough money to run a car/a n other bike during the winter months.

Have to agree with rods

the last 2 beemers I owned certainly didn't stand up as well to winter riding as everyone makes out.....the blackbird's I've owned have been better...

However, I am damn tempted to get out on the K1200 S and R....look freaking awesome the naked R.....Samster - gonna have to have a ride now you've reported back !!! :-:

Nah Sam, I reckon it's been so long since you've ridden a bike properly that your brain just isn't up to speed yet and that a 600 Bandit would've felt quick :neenaw:

Seriously though, I'd certainly love to give the bike a try, I also like the look of the HP2, if I had enuf dosh that'd make a great winter hack g0551p

Awesome ain't they Sam :yo:
September's Superbike mag has an interesting comparison with the Barge, your old bike the ZX12R and the Busa.
Russ, the HP2 is only coming to this country in very limited numbers, but my brother-in-law who spanners for Busquets BMW (Sports Cup) rode one at the Spanish launch & now wants to trade his 1150GS as he wants to do more off road stuff. Apparently, they are very focused.

Look at this one............... :yo:

Also spent a long while on the 1200GS, the motor's a whole load better than the 1150, it doesn't run out of steam anywhere near as easily. I reckon the GS could be a bit of a track tool it handles that well.........

I work for BMW as a trainer and have to agree, the 1200GS is awsome, I have been on one for the last 3 weeks and I for one would have one...................................................................................................................................if they were 2 grand cheaper!!!!!

They have addressed the corrosion issue they had and suggest they do 'stand up' to a british winter, they have been abused in Germany over the winter, (colder than here!), and stood up well.

isn't the corrosion

issue down the fact of the amount of salt we use over here ? :dunno:

As we don't have harsh or long enough winters to warrant studded tyres we use tons of rock salt instead whereas in Southern Germany they simply turn to studded tyres so they don't have such corrosion issues ? :dunno:

Or am I talkign shite ?:dunno:

Sam I must say it looks the bollocks and from what you say it sounds like a great naked! Dirty Paella you must be loosing your touch, not taking the piss out of the ABS brakes as 'early learning centre' brakes!!!

guess that explains why you are able to part with your blackbird, although the blueness of it must also be an incentive

Oh dear Pi-Air, school boy error mate. Nowt wrong with ABS, it's the linked Honda system that = ELC brakes.

should have seen the race...

at Donnington with the powercup beemer racers....friggin things are seriously seriously rapid....they sound awesome, look menacing and go like stink.

Much better racing than the boxercup which sounded like one of Berties wet farts on the fudgemobile......

that's exactly what i have heard. apparently the paint or something isn't designed to stand up to salt... because on the continent they don't use anti freeze deveices which encourage corrosion of metals!!:bang: so it doesn't matter how bad the winters are in germany - they use a chemical on the roads, a british winter is going to get to work on any bike

No Stealth, that's not the bike I'm raving about, it's the K1200R that's got my attention.....

The one you guys rode at Rockingham is the one I referred to as the 12R/Busa/Bird pretender........... had a good look and a sit on it but it's just trying to be a blend of two bikes that I've already owned, the Bird and the 12R - acres of plastics and very lengthy. I'm not doubting that it's very good, in fact I think BMW have a fine range of machines at the moment, but I'm hankering after something different.

The K1200R is the same engine, same state of tune but in a naked package.........here's what it looks like in standard spec

BMW have been moaning for years due to the quality of their paints now. They have been forced to use water based paints rather than good ol' lead based by the EU. Takes 'em longer to get the same effect as the old ways but the finish doesnt last.

From what I can remember, we are the only country in europe that uses vast amounts of salt on the roads,
