K&n good or bad? Hesitation probs

I'm having some serious spluttering/ hesitation problems & have been told its due to the k&n air filter,
Basically bike goes like stink, but going from fast to slow it starts spluttering as if its out of fuel bike even jerks but then once revs reach 6k ish it seems to improve I've noticed it's not as bad when bike is cold. Iv been told its definately the k&n but I'm no mechanic but somehow don't think an air filter could make this happen
What advice can anyone give? Has anyone had this problem?
Looking forward to your help
P.s. 1997 carb model

the consensus on the site seems to be that K&N filters are not a good option for a blackbird. Reading past posts blackbirds, like a very smooth air flow and either the manufacturers unit or Hi FLow are your best bet. Can't comment on your bike as i am a new 1997 Carb owner myself but these bikes do have a flat spot does not sound like your problem though..

Someone will be along to help...

Been searching through the Internet most if the night & you're right with k&n everyone seems to have the same issues when they have one fitted, so today's job is to whip it off & see if I can cleanup the oem & retest the bike, apart from the spluttering it still goes well 170mph+ (so Iv been told officer from my friend who took it on a private road)

Wish you luck with it, it looks like its going to be a great day to try it out..

Wow what a difference. Much quicker Smoother, no more spluttering can't notice a flat spot at all,
& all this because of the k&n

Totally disagree K&N power Comander (EFI) rejetted (Carbed) Dyno awesome so if you want the bike to go like it was designed to fit all of the above & get it sorted.
But other will be along to tell you use a paper filter......but I know better.

Que the guys who haven't taken the time & cant be bothered to do the job right & blame the tool.

Yes but how much difference would you get from a bike that is quick enough as standard? I only bought the k&n because I thought stupidly more air would make it run better, but Without a remap the k&n will alter the fuel air ratio & the bike will run too lean, so I would need bigger jets in the carbs, so I resorted back to the origional honda filter & I couldn't believe the difference.
I'm now tempted during the winter months to go for a rejet stage 1 or would I need more doing exhausts etc

The bike comes out of the showroom as it was designed. So by adding the above you have changed the design.

How does chucking the bike into a shop and getting them to fit and set up the above cost you time? It does not. To set up a power commander for a bike takes the experts over 2 hrs and something 400 adjustments to get it right. Yes anybody can download a map and sling it in, which will be close but it will not be correct for that bike.

The standard airfilter worked for him, so you cant disagree either as he hasnt got your bike,

I must admit I'm happy with the outcome, I basically bought a dud of a blackbird all I could afford but bike started when I bought it got it home & it leaked a full tank of fuel overnight on the garage, next morning front & rear brakes seized on, rear wheel bearing was blue and also seized, couldn't get bike started so full service was done more as piece of mind, tyres were borderline of being illegal, chain is on its last legs & still needs replacing, had some of the plastics resprayed as it had been on its side all of this work parts etc cost me over ?2000 for a 1997 with 15k on the clock which I still hadn't ridden properly, I was beginning to regret my purchase & thought I'd resell it(at a loss) but then this splutter was the final straw & knew deep down it had something to do with fuel I just didn't think it was worth spending another couple of hundred on something that mightn't work,
Now I'm so happy with it I'm thinking of selling my 2000 zx6r & blackbird & putting the money toward a newer model

Sorry to bore with my near life story each to their own though what makes 1 person happy wont always please the other & I'm happy. Could I be happier with a rejet? I'm not capable of DIY with it & can't really justify spending loads on something that won't keep my licence long in my wallet

No bore for me, but i would say don't throw out the Carb version, purely on the basis of its age

Their is a lot going for the carb versions of this bike..R#?

My point is if you just fit a part that is designed to enhance performance it more often than not require a professional to set it up ie Power Commander exhaust air filter turbo super charger good suspention ect ect just because you can buy & fit a product does not mean it with work, & then claim the product is no good is just being ignorant of all the facts.

I fitted a part that was advertised as a drop in replacement for the original filter "designed to fit into your existing factory air box. Their drop-in design means adding performance is simple. you simply remove the disposable air filter and replace it with a K&N. See applicable instruction sheet for details"
I wasn't suggesting atall that this product was rubbish it just wasn't of any use to me when the bike performed in a nearly unusable & slightly dangerous way when it was fitted, its not like I'm gonna ring the supplier and demand a refund, I bought it & unfortunately this time it went pear shaped..........I've had these just drop in & go on my zx10, 2007 zx6, 2000 zx6, Ducati 748, zzr1100 this time I was just unlucky & to make the bike rideable it would cost me an extra ?100 ?200 ???? Which I personally didn't feel justified in paying that amount,
I am also very grateful for EVERYONE'S help & feedback positive & negative after all that's what my intention was, advice to be able to sort out a problem without having to pay the dealers a small fortune to fix it for me!
P.s. ill sell you said k&n filter for half what I paid for it less than a month ago

I have 1 thank you, hey Ho as long as your happy ?

Or a better idea you could come and fit it & set it all up for me ill get the dyno jet kit plenty of coffee & biccys then I can see how much better my bike is without f**king it up doing it myself...

Or why not look into finding your local guy who knows what he's doing that way you get the extra horse you were looking for when you made the K&N purchase ?
