For months I have suffered from an intermittent fault ( total drop out ) of the internet on my LAN.
Tried all sorts..
Found it tonight.. one of the cat 5 leads had a broken clip ! ( the clip that holds it in place in the router )
The clip was there but had partially snapped. looked ok, and the few times I had physically pulled it to check it was ok it did not move..
This afternoon I decided to replace all the various leads,, Just happened to go to change the faulty one first..
As soon as I touched it this time the bloody thing fell out !
Decided to change the plug but then could not find the spare plugs
Did find an odd one.. cut the duff plug off, prepped the cable, then found the bloody crimping tool had one side of the jaws missing ! Gawd knows how...
Gave up and fitted a new cable
What a bloody saga .. but at least the fault is no more :)

Used to drive me up the wall. Users would swear blind that they'd checked and the tab was fine. The only way to be sure was to go to the users desk, pull the connector out of the port and flick the retaining tab to check.

Worst intermittent dropout problem I had to investigate was at a customers office where almost everyone claimed to be experiencing intermittent dropouts throughout the day. Turned out to be the company secretary using a router as a footrest.

Good job she had nice legs and wore short skirts. Sometimes it pays to be a perv. :p

True - he sets up new PC in, say Leicester, heads back to London

Next day- "the screen is black".
Did a few diagnostics over the phone.

On to the train, back to Leicester, turned up the brightness on the monitor!!!!!
Oh it's working.

Long time ago.

And - they set up a bunch of PCs.
Everything going grand.
Then....
Complaints, they keep rebooting.
Much investigation over several days, no solution.

So he's standing in the room just looking at the equipment. Suddenly he asks.
"Did you change anything in the room since we set it up"

"Oh we put down carpet tiles"

Ok, so in future when you are working and as you enter the room touch the metal frame on the desks.

"WHAT"

It stopped the rebooting - tiles were synthetic and people were building up static.

Some time after that I had a guy in a computer class and PC kept rebooting. I told him to rub the metal leg of the table frequently. He laughed.
No more reboots.

Oh dear, you’ve just reminded me of what happened over quite a few evenings in our new offices in a refurbished car parts department.

We’d come in early in the morning and the overnight backups had failed - again.

It happened every now and again, very confusing, and the computer was switched off. Wtf!

Apparently the cleaner came in the office every night, did her quick hoover up, and turned off the radiator someone had left switched on. Well it was by now a tiny box compared to our old server with its dedicated clean room.
