As some of you know I left last Friday lunch time to ride to Lake Garda
Friday evening my son and I plotted up in Brussels, expecting to do a large one on the Saturday
about 25 miles down the E40 is as far as we got.
My hernia ( had it for years ) chose that moment to try and leave the building.
Made it in to a service area... Darrell had to call an ambulance, which duly arrived and took me to Leuven University Hospital..
No pre-op or anything... took me straight to theatre and had a four hour op to get my bits and bobs back inside me where they are supposed to be

They let me out of the hossy in to the care of the person who came over to collect me.
Not really too with it yet and not answering too many mails..
They said I have got to be wearing a full body wrap thing 24-7 for three weeks and during the day for another two weeks... which makes sitting in front of a key board a bit uncomfy

I am on the mend though... just want it known I am not ignoring folk there IS a reason for poor email response time :)

And you are currently where? Are you mobile enough to get home/continue or relayed back by AA/RAC?

Not the best place to be taken poorly John.

Wish you a speedy and full recovery. Anything I can do to help, just say!

All sorted out almost before the ambulance arrived.
Two mates jumped on a bike, shot over and one of them rode my bike home :)
Next day I was innundated with kind offers to transport me home when I got the OK
I was released on Wednesday at 11am, and was home supping a cuppa with woman in time to watch the six pm news !

Far from it TC..
Turned out I could not have picked a better spot in the whole of Europe !!!
The hossy is Europe's premier university hospital and the surgeon is world famous in his field of keyhole gastro surgery
The hossy was amazing, the staff truly wonderful and nothing was too much trouble
Only complaint I had was too much grub !!! ( and decent grub as well apart from the crappy Liptons tea )

One worrying thing
Before I left the surgeon him self came to see me
Please Mr Smith, i can see no future issue at all and you are healing well.
Next Tuesday or Wednesday remove the dressing.
There are no stitches to be removed and nothing at all to worry about...
If you have any concerns at all please ring us here ( I have his personal number ) and I will advise you.
If I think there is something wrong we will arrange transport back to this hospital

( fair enough so far although a bit surprising )
Then the bomb shell
We would rather cover the cost of bringing you back than have you in the hands of the NHS

Bloody hell !!! Just how bad is the NHS and exactly WHAT is being kept from the brit public ?
And what sort of rep has the NHS got with other countries that is so terrible he ( the surgeon ) was genuinely concerned about them getting involved with the work he had done ?

One week one day ago I was on the slab apparently in a pretty poorly old way..Today I was off down the shops on the bike getting her Sunday paper..
Had virtually NO pan from 48 hours after the op.. The hole all the surgery ( inc having to wire wrap some of my tubes because they had trebled in size and had to be brought under control ) they worked through is about 1" long ( I had a sneak peak when they replaced the dressing before sending me home)
Lower abdomen bruising is quite extensive and it does look like I have been cage fighting again, but even that is fading now

All in all I reckon I was pretty lucky ! :)

As I started reading your first post, my thoughts were just as well it happened there than here because the NHS is shite. I don’t have any inside knowledge of what goes on there but I have no faith in them since they failed on a number of occasions to diagnose my sinus issues and why I couldn’t breathe. As a toddler, they told my mum that there was nothing wrong with me, it was just a habit and I’d grow out of it, etc. At 14, I tried again and my gp told me to stop smoking; I’d never smoked in my life. One final go at 26, and twat of a gp said there was nothing he could do despite me not being able to breathe out of one barrel.

I am so glad that I had my knee surgery, sinus surgery, rehab after I managed to burst a disc in my back and a camera shoved up my arse in Singapore. I am also very relieved to have private health insurance, even if it is with those twats BUPA.

All the best for a continued speedy recovery, John. BTW, did any of the nurses have big tits?

Really sorry to hear that John.

Take care, glad you seem to have got the best of care.

By the way, when the surgeon was in there ,did he do the loom fix?

I stand corrected John. Seems like you were in the best place after all.

One did but could frighten gargoyles off of churches, but the one that gave me a bed bath was very pretty but not well endowed in the top bollox dept.

Daft sod !!
I run on proper carbs not injectors !!
But they reckon my charging circuit was ok and my reg/rec had a few years left in it yet :)

good looking AND modest
Virtually what the doctors said to me in Egypt, and the incompetent twats at Wakefield that were so inept they didn't tell us why they kept me waiting for hours until Yvo complained to them, it appears they were looking for an Arabic reader "to read my notes from Egypt" the fact that it was in ENGLISH and they hadn't even bothered to open the file just confirmed what I already knew and John has just discovered, The Hospital in Egypt was spotless, here I was kept in isolation for a week "because I had my stroke in a third world country" and the room was cleaned once!! third world??? :(

I was playing golf this morning and my playing partner John, is a heart surgeon, when I mentioned about “come back to Belgium if there’s a problem” is because over on the continent the surgeons are paid per operation, whereas in the UK they are on a salary.

I still think I’d prefer to be ill “over there” than chance it over here. I had my hernia op done in a small local hospital rather than the main one in Exeter so I could always see the same people.

I had great service in Andorra, I can really recommend their A&E department (y)
