You have to admire their ingenuity and expertise, though.

Wonder why they don't do a one-eighty and sell their knowledge back to "the establishment" as security consultants.

Yeah - then turn double agents to teach the bastards a lesson! :D

For anyone not sure about using the app, for whatever reason, I think this all they need to not bother. I was in two minds whether to download it when it becomes available. I still might but I'd be very wary of clicking on any link.

I think I mentioned this on another thread its not secure & open to abuse which is good enough reason for binning the whole idea right now in my book

As far as I am concerned this is about saving lives.

If it saves one life it has succeeded.

Anything else is irrelevant.

Of course there are scum out there who will try and take advantage so we all need to be wary, same as, sadly, every other area of our lives.

@Dark Angel this is my personal opinion and I don't need a lecture from you on the subject, thanks all the same.

What a bunch of panic stricken tossers.

Our opinions differ on this & that's fine by me (y)

I cant help thinking the money & time wasted on this would have been better spent elsewhere, lets face it anyone who doesn't know they could be at risk by now is living in la la land.

A text isn't going to help you avoid contracting the virus as its already too late if you have been in contact with someone infected, neither is it going to prevent you passing it on considering the incubation period, by the time you know you will have passed it on already

Ok, so if the app saves one life yet 100 people lose their life savings because of scams, is that still a success?

I wasn't going to download it anyway and this article has articulated my view. I'm not downloading the app, even if it becomes a legal requirement. Not. A. F'ing. Chance.

.
That's a matter of perspective.

And that perspective may change depending who's life it is....if it is a nearest and dearest maybe the view will be different compared to a number on a graph.

I would also suggest that mass fraud with a direct link is conjecture at the moment. Some lowlife sending out mass automated texts isn't directly connected to the app. It's the same as getting a text purporting to be from HSBC when you don't have an account with them.

Nope me neither. I'll back my car over the phone if they make it a legal requirement. In fact, I might do it anyway.

It's an interesting debate, but whatever our wishes, or whether or not we'll agree with the law,
if these things become legal requirements, we'll all be forced into accepting the app. anyway.

All apps. required by the service providers will be installed on their devices as standard.

We're talking Apple and Google here, chaps.

Just had an argument with Sainsburys staff over their insistance that you use their self scan devices to shop with, rather than do it the "traditional" way. i.e. load it on the conveyor belt, checkout person scans it and you pay.
But..... you can't use one unless you have a Nectar card and we ditched all those rewards cards years ago.
"You'll have to register online to get one".
"Why? I'm not interested in collecting points, I just want to shop".
"It won't work unless you do".
"Why is that then, all it's doing is totting up my shopping as I scan".
"I don't know about that, sir. We're asking you to use the Smartscan devices to help keep you safe".

And collect data on my shopping habits.

Detail please.

What did you buy?

That is headings, not detail.

So, again, what did you buy?
And an electric can opener for an elderly lady who has arthritic hands.
Quite a clever little device... (the tin opener) Clip it on, switch it on and a few seconds later the lid is off. Tap the button and it releases the lid.

It's pretty obvious that most people would rather 100 strangers lose their life savings as opposed to losing a loved one.

This app is yet another vehicle for mass fraud, as if we didn't have enough anyway, and it's also likely to contain the user's personal details thus opening more avenues for fraud and identity theft. There's no getting away from it, this app needs a lot more work before it can be considered remotely trustworthy.
