Better 'all rounders' Andy ????? What do you have in mind ????

I honestly think it's still one of the best bikes I've ever owned.....did all I ever asked of it and it was always gonna be far better than me.

I like me Pan.....but I do miss the 'Bird's capability.

The 'Bird could use an update but I don't reckon it's ready to be pensioned off just yet.

So ? Whats that got to do with a sport tourer ?

Wolfie said:
there are better commuters

Matter of opinion and also commute

Wolfie said:
there are better looking bikes

Matter of opinion and there are considerably uglier bikes out there.

Wolfie said:

True but is this relevent ?

I dunno but

when getting back into biking I asked a mate what he recomended for something that will cruise in outside lane of the motorway with grunt to spare, have reasonable weather protection, very reliable and can duck and dive through jams though not to pizza delivery level. He recomended the Bird and he was spot on - I'll consider changing when the V5 comes out. The only critisism possibly is low end grunt at around 3-4k, was out on a ride and a GS kept leaving me when we got to the open road and it is a bit rude to the villagers to be sitting in 1st doing 30 just so I can kick it at the marker - but that is just quibling, I burnt him out of a roundabout onto a duel carriageway so alls fair. R#?

Well thats a good list you have made Wolfie..
now take away all the shite that either falls apart, rots away, is unfaired, or as slow as a box of lights and see whats left..

Some good bikes in the list Andy......but would you swap your 'Bird for any one of them ???? :dunno:

no bike rots away if they did their would not be any of them over 2 years old left on the road.

believe every one comes with or can have a half fairing at least.

slow it what respect, straight line??? buy a drag bike, around corners??? most of them handle better than a bird.

Brakes thunderace, fazer etc etc

Well, having got 2.5 of those bikes, IMHO, some are better, some are worse, but none are a direct rival for the 'Bird.
Obviously having not had a good 'bird personally, I can't comment about long term ownership, but I'm on my second Ace, and I've had the Strom longer than the 'bird, so it must be doing something for me, engine problems aside.

Don't agree with Jaws' comments about rotting away though, any bike can rot if not looked after, 'birds included.

Easy innit, just take your original post categories but add build quality as well, add the bird to your list of bikes then go through the list giving them marks out of whatever for each category, see which one floats your boat best then :yo:

But it's everyones free choice, you don't HAVE to have a particular bike,or be swayed by anyone elses opinion unless you want it as a fashion accessory because it's the fastest, latest race rep, Harley "lifestyle" etc.
The bird still does it for me and that's all that counts, don't care about anyone elses opinion as to MY choice. I could have a 20 year old bike but if it was what I wanted and did what I want then it's no concern of anyone else.

Stay a free spirit Wolfie, do what you want and have what you want, within your budget that is, fuck everyone else :-:

Look at what Honda have done during the life of the blackbird to update it, fuel injection, love it or loathe it! :dunno:

Then consider what the other two manufacturers, that are reguarly quoted as being blackbird alternatives have had to do in an attempt to keep up with the bird. Kawasaki even keep two different bikes going :h because they can't succesfully combine the two :loo: and both have had completely new models. The other, suzuki, would snap if you carried anything other than yourself!!! %$fan
Now even BMW are having a go, will it match the bird, to new to say, but initial reports aren't what you expect from BMW, will have to wait and see.

Just beacause Honda hasn't given the 'bird a razzamatazz relaunch with a new model does not mean it is past it, it means that they really don't need to, nothing combines all the aspects of -

power - you really don't need any more, speed - you really don't need to go that fast, durabililty - even all year abuse, ease of handling - a bike this big should not be so easy to move at slow speeds, this all adds up to a big, fast, safe friendly bike.

Yes, other bikes may do one or more better than the bird, but none does all of it as good.

Wurley :neenaw:

  i do  build quanity at least 6 off that list have better paint,

Kawasaki even keep two different bikes going
both faster than the bird , one pisses all over it in power, handling and brakes and the other is on par if slightly behind.

The other, suzuki, would snap if you carried anything other than yourself!!!
again faster , better handling, just as comfortable, just as good on the juice, think it was about 3 bikes in total that the subframe snapped, how many birds wiring loom has gone tits up??? as least 10 bikes from this site.

power - you really don't need any more
torque or bhp,

this all adds up to a big, fast, safe friendly bike.
 bit like a bus then yeah???? or a nice sierra???

Has the national speed limit been altered since the bird was first introduced?
has road construction been altered since the bird was first introduced?
do we have a different climate since the bird was first introduced?
has the human form been dramatically altered since the bird was first introduced,?

NO!

So how can the bird be past it? if it is still capable of everything it was when first introduced.

One of the bikes you mention Wolfie is one of my favourites the 1200 Bandit, some people say it is outdated, but it is still a top bike for half the price of the bird that is my opinion anyway,

so is my 23 year cx500 and my dads 1955 bsa but they are both outdated and past it so why not the bird???

agree, and for a few quid they can out perform the bird in every dept. except speed and still have change left over.

Err.. bollocks 8l1nd go through your list again and tell me 6 that are better...not equal such as the Hondas. And it's overall scores not individual points.

You enjoy playing Devils Advocate don't you Wolfie :} anyway which bike from the list is it what you want to swop for.?

the hondas are not equal they are better.

the bird paint is well know to be soft.

the truimphs, the thunderace, the fazer, the BMWs all have better paint.

how many have better suspension as standard????

out of that little list all of them apart from the tdm, futura, varadero, v strom, tiger and the VFR (cause i dont like them at all but they are still a good bike)

You enjoy playing Devils Advocate don't you Wolfie

dont like rose tinted glasses and blind faith.

Fed up of reading the bird is so great and the best bike since bikes were invented etc etc etc, the bird is an ok bike there are much better bikes out there and a lot that are much worst in their own ways.

I know a hornet rider that will eat 90% of bird owners for a snack and will stick with the other 10%, and he is not a riding god. are you dave??? yet he does it on a lesser bike???

My point Wolfie the bikes of that era can still do what they were designed to do in that era but road compositions have altered in the last 20 or so years, as have tyre compositions, allowing for much faster speeds also bikes nowadays are so much different from 20 odd years ago, that is why the older bikes are outdated but the bird as with most modern bikes is still as or more technically advanced than the roads on which they are ridden.
