Not that i find the braking that bad, but feel it could be improved a touch.

I've read some threads about braided hoses etc and the fact the brakes are linked coming into play.....but i'm looking for a quick fix... something like a low-cost upgrade without going mad on parts.

Any suggestions?? :dunno:

Oh, and mine is about 8 years old on the original rubber hoses with well under 20K miles!

was gonna say originial rubbers.....but knew i'd get all the quips from you guys and gals.....

I know a few of you've de-linked, but cant say i want to go to that trouble.

Coming from 25 years of "normal" brakes, did the braided de-link, thought it felt awful, no power or bite. Bought the full Goodridge kit from John, feels mint. I know it's a fair bit of cash, but it's worth every penny. Looks like those Honda guys knew what they were doing....

OS, i'm like you coming from many years, all normal brakes. Theyr'e really not bad for 'normal' speeds but when getting on you sometimes need that 'rapid stop' without locking & thats why im considering the upgrade.

about ?250 or so for the goodridge kit aint it? what's in it? Is it a simple DIY job?

I locked mine up less on the rapid stops WITH linked brakes than I have since de linking c7u8 (only been delinked just before the winter :})

ta j, but not in the mkt for that price kit [its not expensive, but ive other things to do with the cash - maybe i just play at riding the xx part-time hobbiest, rather than you 'serious lifers' g0nn3 ] Maybe if xx was a couple of years old then that'd be diff story.

thnx neway

well there you go...thats quite a good argument i'd say. cheers sweetie

im not one for fiddling about or messing with too many standard parts, cos of the re-sale element [always better to be standard].

When I first got mine, I listened to all the amazing bike riders I knew in the pub who all told me linked brakes were dangerous and rubbish etc! when I suggested on here I'd like to delink mine I was advised in no uncertain terms to 'leave well alone'!!! And he was right! I know I've delinked them now, but thats just cos I felt like it, not because I didn't like the linked set up!

I've had BBird for 5 years now and honestly, the only front wheel lockups I've had have been on delinked bikes. And the only rear lock up on a linked bike was braking in the wet and catching the white line (and even then, leaving the front of the bike to sort itself out meant I made it to work in one piece - albeit with a somewhat faster heart beat than usual!!) - and yes, I ride a bit silly sometimes! :}:}

Give yourself a chance to see how the linked bakes 'really' feel. you might still not like them, but bear in mind that unless you sort out using ALL the pistons in all three calipers, I don't think your braking will actually be 'better' delinked, just different!

Smix, can't see that de-linking will lead to more lockups than linked. The reason is probably due to having braided hoses from the de-linking kit giving you a fair bit less play on the brake lever, in a panic/heavy braking situation you're hitting the brakes as hard as you did with the rubber hoses fitted and "voila one lockup".

I'd be willing to bet you'd have locked the front with a full CBS braided set too.

BTW in my sillier moments I've managed to do a stoppie (albeit a small one :p ) with both the linked and the delinked setup

you could be right. I do think I have braked as hard with linked, but who knows for sure!!

Got absolutely nothing against linked and not pushing de linked at all. Just think its worth waiting to be sure before rushing into the change?? (and I'm sure I've heard of stoppies with linked too!!! never acheived that though!) I know you can do burn outs (is that the right phrase?) too with linked!! its just a question of knowing how!! :} :} :} (Oh - and having the bottle to try - which I don't!)

The rear brake is only activated when the front wheel is turning so if you want to do a burnout; as long as your not moving forwards when you start, just hold the front brake on and away you go :yo::yo:

There then Result :lick: R#?theres really not much point messing about too much for a small improvement. naturally others will have their individual opinionsd04l1ng but wot works for one dont for everyone else, do it?

And, do you or they inform insurance co that bike has been altered - like they should?

my 'style' is more 'cas' with the occasional blast, rather than outright stupid, so i'll leave well alone, apart from later improving things like pads etc as suggested by Duck n Dive above.....

thnx s, for yor thoughts.k1ap k1ap

thats the fun with biking - it is so individual. Just cos one person is a fan of one thing doesn't mean its right for everyone else!!!

I'm insured with ebike, and I ticked a box or something to let them know!! Can't remember if it made much difference, which would suggest it didn't make a huge difference!

You still might decide to de link, but give the standard set up a fair try first

have lots of fun :yo: :k

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned regular fluid changes! IMHO the cheapest way to 'better' brakes!

Ha ha just what i was going to suggest as i need to do mine, must be crying out for a brake fluid change after ten years

excuse my ignorance on this 'fluid business' subject  (as i leave it to schedlued service) but what is IHMO?

mine's 8 years & 17000 miles - dont think the fluids been fully changed in that time. but apart form "learn9ing how to breake properly" - which is a valid point for everyone - i quite like the sound of this cheaper fix, (prior to doing any braided, etc).

Bearing in mind it is possible to lock both wheels of the BB under braking in even dry well metalled roads with hot tyres, how much more braking may one use?

Depends how much extra weight they are carrying!

Pillion and luggage might affect it too
