Tried a few (lots) of bikes at the NEC. Had settled on a Triumph Speed Triple until I sat on the bloody thing !!! Due to my rather large (bloater) proportions there was no way I was gonna be able to ride one for more than 20 miles without getting cramped up. Made a date for a test ride of a few other Triumph's....went there last Friday.

Daytona...too small. Speed Triple....too small. Sprint RS....fitted me, but it's another sport-tourer. Rocket 111.... incredible, but too heavy, too wide, and too expensive !!!

So.....just about to give up when the salesman suggests the Bonneville. I laughed, took the piss, ......he said "try one". An hour later after the test ride I'm putting down the money. I feel the way I did 30 years ago when I first started riding. Simple mechanics, carbs, easy handling, does 50 to the gallon, tops out (so I'm told) at around 115mph....that'll do me.

Go on then....laugh away peeps !!!!!! :} :}

My downstairs toilet reading contains some copies of Classic Bike. A few days back I was in there growing a tail and stumbled across a May 2001 article where they pitted the new 'Hinckley' Bonnie against a period T140A (1979).

The newwun managed 113mph, although they reckoned the rev limiter was uneccessary and the silencers restricted it greatly. The oldunn managed 116mph but had reverse magaphones and Mikunis.

I reckon you're gonna love it Steve - rediscover the joys of biking :bow: :beer:

Oh dear !!!

Unless they have done some VERY serious changes to the bike you are not gonna be getting 50 mpg.. more like 30 truth be told.

When the original review was done the guys complained about the poor economy..

A good mate of mine said fook it, bastard comics never get these things right..

Bought a new one to do his commute on. 3 months later had to sell it cos it cost more to run that his 2 litre Mondeo !
