Chatting to one of our Very Senior officers a few months back, his personnal opinion was that the RAF would be lucky to make its centenary (1st April - now there was someone with a sense of humour - 2018). And if we did then it would be purely for political bollox and we would be shut down on the 2nd.

Still, as far as JHC goes, we may as well be part of the Army. The ignorant, knuckle dragging, :wank: :wank: think they run us already.

i would be surprised if the raf didn't make it's centenary. things are becoming much more tri-service, but modern armed conflict demands air superiority (can you imagine the recent gulf war, but with the iraqis having planes in the sky?!). i don't think the navy air arm, or the army helicopter branch are able to take over from the RAF at the moment. In time this could be changed. however... if one HAD to go, it would be the RAF... but not for quite sometime i think... but if they do go can i take a healthy redundancy package please :-:

It would have to be the RAF, although it gives me no pleasure in saying so.

The argument over whether it should be an independant service or part of the other two has raged for decades, and will continue to do so. THe RAF was the worlds first independant air force, the yanks didnt manage it until after the 2WW. It probably depends on what you want to do with it, whether or not you want an airforce to project power or simply to back up and defend existing forces. Best example is cab-rank Typhoon operations in Normandy in 1944.

The problem with the Raf [and this was proved in the Gulf war] is that during conflict it is dependant on allied bases from which to operate from due to fuel ranges. I feel that in future conflicts we will not be able to rely so much on allies as they are losing confidence in the British and Americans.
