I`ve got to do a presentation at college in the next month or so and I need help choosing a topic. It`s got to have `intellectual` content apparently, needs to be 10-15 mins long, have the use of at least 1 visual aid (VISUAL not sexual or marital, for those of you who have spent too long with their minds in the gutter), which can be white board, OHP, flip chart etc.

So come on guys and gals, let's hear your ideas. All suggestions(preferably sensible, yeah right %$fan ) gratefully received.

  :k :k

Pick something that you have an interest in, Tooti.

What hobbies do you have ?? What do you enjoy doing in your spare time ??

Go with a topic that you have a wide knowledge base in. The problem with trying to deliver a presentation on a subject you don't know intimately is some bright spark in the audience WILL know it inside out.....and take great delight in your discomfort come question time at the end.

So.....give us some pointers as to your spare time interests.

(No smutty replies please, Lads) !!!!!

Agree with Supa.

Go with what you know and prepare.

Fail to prepare, then prepare to fail

Actually, what with it being Cadburys 100th birthday this year, nd the fact that the Cadbury factory is just down the road from here, I think it`s an ideal excuse to visit. What say you lot?? :dunno:

(oh, and glad you`re feeling better Pierre, it wasn`t for your benefit, honest  )

I once had a delivery to Cadburys, got to see how the creme eggs are made, since that day and the smell in the factory I have never touched another creme egg!

But the factory shop was good though!!

Counter steering.. baffles the hell out of most folk ( even bikers ) and you can demonstrate your understanding of the gyroscopic principles in a practical application..

Nice idea but I think they`d object to me riding the beast straight through the middle of college. Counter steering confused the heck out of me until that last track day. Had a great instructor who made it all crystal clear.

Mmmmmm creme eggs, I can eat those by the bucket full, not goos for the hips though

Don't forget the cardinal rules of presentation:

K eep
I t
S imple
S tupid

and always

1. tell them what you're going to tell them
2. tell them
3. tell them what you've told them

Your spiel/demonstration should take no more than 11/12 minutes as you will need the other 3/4 to 1. set the scene and 3. sum up.

Don't pick too big a subject. So not the whole 'The Harry Potter Novels by J K Rowling' but more 'The practical reasons why Hagrid rides a Triumph'

Have you got PowerPoint/a laptop?

If you are going to use OHP you need access to a photocopier or laser printer to make the Acetates.

Flipcharts are okay but you will need time to prepare your bullet points etc in advance. Whiteboards can only really be used 'on the hoof' so unless you have fast primary-school-teacher style handwriting, not good.

Handouts are good, they can take up spare time if your presentation is too short!

Eye contact is necessary however can be avoided as long as you choose spots at forehead level beyond the heads all round the audience on which to bestow your benevolent gaze. If you smile whilst speaking, your voice will sound much friendlier. Invest in some postcards and put your bullet points on these (one on each - single words if poss) in large letters in felt-nib pen. It stops you getting lost in the middle, keeps your hands occupied at waist level or below, which makes you look relaxed and stops you waving your arms about and looking silly. Aim to pitch your voice at least an octave lower than usual to avoid squeaking.

Practice, practice and practice speaking slowly, out loud in front of a mirror on your own. Do it again to an audience of young 'uns teddies. Think of a couple of questions you would like to be asked and plant them in case you don't get any!

By intellectual what exactly do you mean? (People will have to use their brains to listen!)

Wow Jen, you sound like quite an expert!
We have access to photocopiable acetate and also have access to Power Point but the chap assessing has already said he`s not keen on P.P cos it`s just a techie version of OHP. The group I`m talking to is small, maybe 20 tops if everyone can be bothered to get their lazy arses in and we all know each other reasonably well so it will be quite informal. I have no problem with the actual presentation as I`ve been a teacher for the last 8 years and it`s pretty much the same sort of thing, it`s just the content I need to be happy with. After all you can`t pad stuff out with b/s if you`re not entirely comfortable with the content can you?
Having said that, thanks for all the advice cos it has raised a few things I hadn`t thought of. Where would we be without this site eh?? :}
