ID Cards, Why?

Watching Question Time last night and listening to everyone on there disagreeing with the introduction of ID cards, can someone please explain why they are being introduced?

First it was to stop terrorism. So if the London bombers carried id cards we'd have stopped them? I think not.

Now it is to stop ID theft. How long after they are introduced will someone be able to clone them and become you? Surely this makes ID theft more attractive? The implications of a lost or stolen card could be incredible. Are there really going to be fingerprinting and/or retinal scanning machines in all the banks and building societies etc.?

So can anyone come up with the REAL reason this will be imposed on us?

Incidently, although having an id card was 'voluntary' in the Labour Manifesto at the last election now it appears that after 2008 you won't get a passport without an id card. I make that 'compulsory'.

s04pb0x6 Thank you, much better for that!

Worry

when they make it compulsory to carry it at all times. Big fines if you don't no doubt. On second thoughts the banks will insist you show it before you can get money out of your account............ compulsion by the back door. I can just hear it now. Minister for Homeland security Hierich Himmler stands up in Parliament and says " as most people are now carry id cards out of choice we thought we would make it easier for everyone.....it is now compulsory"

these people are utterly contemptable b0x2

It will be just another law that normal law abiding people can break. No doubt the fine will be great than most. I holiday in this country, not been abroad for years. So I wont be getting on till the last possible minute.

do they recon that a terrorist will apply for one and admit in his/her job description as such thereby making them easier to identify.

They did the same with the gun laws. Made it illegal to own one so all the good citizens who were registered and used official gun clubs had to hand in their toys. How many armed robbers, drug dealers or other scroates handed in their weapons for fear of getting a fine?

It's always the ones who try to live by or at least near to the rules that get penalised.

And for the time being you will probably need to provide a passport to get an ID card. c7u8

If my passport and photo driving licence are good enough for ID now, why do I need to get a card :dunno:

because not all people have a passport or a picture driving licence,im all for id cards as this country seems to be behind the rest of the world in this area,if we had id cards we wouldnt need passports to travel to europe, getting your money out if you havnt got your credit/debit/cash point card would be easier if you lost them
