Sorry got bored witht he video.........but MFG.........what a bag of S!*T!!!!

Car does NOT handle.......!

Engine blows hasd gaskets......!

Best modification for these was that Rover went bust!!!!

Used to run a Caterham Seven.........friend invested simiular amount in MGF and decided to take me for a spin in it............. :dunno: Following this I decided to take him around the same route in the Caterham...........he started off not wanting the full harness.............this quickly turned into a white knuckle experience...............following the second bend.........miles later I could see a lump forming (must be the side ways roundabouts)......when we got back he claimed that the Caterham was NOT a sports car......................It was a rocket!!!

What if I had really tried??????

DON'T buy anything with a K-Series engine............they blow up!!!! Used to run a Trackday company and the car that gave us most problem was the Elise...............Yeap head gasket!!!!!!

Still MGF and Elsie are good looking.............!  :puke:

the only reason head gaskets go is because rover mechanics were incompetant and couldnt service them correctly.

Any servicing on mgf's should be done by Mike Satur .. www.mikesatur.co.uk

I had loads of mods and servicing done there and never had a problem... yet i know people that went to rover for a basic service and had a gasket go.... problem... rover mechanics.

Appreciate that Rover Mechanics may not be the best in the world......but why do Caterham and Lotus head gaskets go With the same engine installed? Not to mention Freelanders?

:dunno:

The only thing i can say is the mechanics... drop an email to mike satur , he'll give you the full reason , he also installs heavy duty gaskets for peace of mind .

Sorry but

I agree with Robert,, MGF VVC,is a nice looker but the head gasket on the K series is a well known problem,, we had an MGF for nearly 2 years,, head gasket went while the wife was going to work,, could have got it fixed but all the peeps I spoke to wouldn't put a long enough guarentee that it wouldn't happen again,,so dropped the phookin thing like a hot spud,,, got a good trade in to (mind you didn't tell the dealership the gasket had failed  )
Have been told it is now sorted on the newer cars.

Don't forget the average ?500 repair bill to get to the improved gasket condition.............also the number of heads that fail pressure testing duringt he repair causing a need for a replacement head......!

Got a friend that has done dozens or the things........?300 a pop and makes a nice living thanks to the K-Series. Estimates that around 60% fail pressure testing..........adding to the repair bill!

?500 quoted above is the average price he's always told when he recieves a call for help and does not include testing or the added work if head fails....!

Shame engine is so light (hence use in Caterham Sevens) and very tuneable (friend running just over 250bhp out of a tuned Dave Andrews 1.9 version).........sadly engine cost over 10K :neenaw: and has once thrown a rod and the latest problem has been a cracked head..............all that gas flow work int he bin.

But must admit when it is on song it is a flyer.........FAR quicker than my old Vauxhall powered Caterham which put out a 100,000 mile safe 190bhp.

in summary potentially great engine with same problem as the old Climax unit going back to Hillman Imp days. Perhaps with a little more R&D?? :dunno:

I agree BUT if you look at it where I'm coming from, what ells can you get for 2 balloons & a goldfish?
and the top come's down, looks reasonable, u don't get lumbered with the grand-kids and is probably worth twice as much in parts than what you paid for it (if shit ap'ends).
I'm under no illusions that it's fast :} 'been a biker of 36 yer'

So if you look at em from where I'm coming from? thier a good buy, unless you prefer a 2CV or a rusty old Escort soft-top for the same dosh or even more

Yerr HGF, if/when it happens you either have it fixed or just get another one (MGF) 'they are as cheap as chips'' ''LOL''

Lol, easy to blame the mech's but not true!!

The reason the head gaskets go is poor engine design by Powertrain, the makers of the K series engine, and also the risky materials used to make the gasket itself. They made some really weird changes from the norm such as the thermostat location for one. WTF were they thinking?

Just copied this from Wikipidea, it explains it a bit...

K-Series problems
The engine's head-gasket was made out of an innovative silicone-type substance rather than the more traditional materials. However the cylinder head waterways were poorly machined and the thermostat was placed in a less than optimum position. These factors often resulted in head-gasket failure, particularly in larger vehicles such as the Land Rover Freelander.

In these applications the greater body weight caused the engine to heat-up too quickly compared to the rest of the system. The thermostat would then open and a sudden rush of cooler water would enter the head causing temperature distortion.

This was relieved to a certain extent by a special pressure release thermostat which, with the aid of a spring loaded valve, allowed a small amount of cool water to enter the head so that the engine warmed-up a little slower and more evenly. However, the optimum solution of moving the thermostat to the outflow from the head, allowing that rest of the water system to warm-up with the engine, was never implemented.

Another modification to reduce chance of the head-gasket failing again, is to insert steel dowels into the cyliner block when changing the head-gasket which renforces the new gasket.

More recently, Land Rover have released a reinforced MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) head gasket for the in-line four cylinder, and 24 valve V6 versions of the K-Series engine, which until mid-2005 was fitted to the petrol variants of their Freelander model. A modified oil rail was also developed to be used in conjunction with the gasket when fitted. Although only time will tell as to whether the improved design will cure this fault of the K-Series engine, many professionals and enthusiasts now recommend the fitment of this new design over the OE standard gasket as fitted by Powertrain K-Series engines, especially in models such as the MG F/TF and Freelander, where the applications are their most stressful.

MG owners club??

I did 108,000 miles in my P reg MGF - sold it to my father-in-law last year and it still has its original head gasket. Never serviced by Rover once out of warranty. Great little car......decent tyres with upgraded suspension and brakes made it go round corners quicker than I wanted to....

Your comments prompted me to think it was time for a change - didn't realise it changed all previous posts.....still a newbie at this...........

Anyway, no matter what I think about the MG I don't have it anymore and am very happy to be back on a bike after 10 years of cars only. I've only had the bird since august but am very happy with it. This forum is great and I look forward to meeting many at the bashes........I'll be the boring one sitting in the corner on my own b0x1
