Interesting I am pleased with my insurers for once...

At the start of August, all our insurance policies become due for renewal. We have a family all in one policy, so My car, Mrs car, daughters car, house contents building insurance.

Daughter was added back last September when she passed her test and inherited her grandmothers Nissan, and putting it onto the family policy saved her about £400 pa on the premium for the year with a promise that they would give her a full years no claims on renewal providing of course she did not make a claim that was her fault.

Anyway, I have been thinking about having to do the annual shop around as the renewal premiums often sky rocket until I go back to them with proof of a lower premium. It is the one task I hate doing as it means spending ages searching and then having to set up DD payments (you all know the score?)

Well, pleasant surprise this morning. Renewal notice came through. 3 cars, + Contents + Building = a £4 increase on last years premium.

I can live with that. It equates to about a .36p increase per month which is less than our pet insurance has gone up by.

So, I don't normally praise insurers, but on this occasion? Well done Admiral

As long as none of you have not attended a speed awareness course in the last five years, Admiral are notorious for classing them as points on license.

That sentence makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

It’s certainly an odd time for insurance, my last two car swaps have involved significantly increased values and ‘power’ yet on both occasions my premium has gone down. Even got a sizeable refund last time.

I have never ever had points on my licence I am proud to say.

Daughters licence is still clean

Wife's points only ever 3 points were spent 8 years ago.

This is my 9th year with Admiral. I have even been the expert on the other side of the court room in cases against Admiral, so pretty familiar with their requirements..

As far as I’m concerned any ‘awareness’ course is simply a means around getting points on the licence, the courses are only offered for bad driving and should be seen as such.

Depends on the area in which you commit the offence.

In my area there are a list of offences that can make you open to an improver course, speed being the main one (also called in some areas as a speed awareness course), but it can cover a whole range of offences, providing the number of points on your licence does not mean you are subject to totting up or the seriousness of the offence requires a prosecution/disqualification/penalty

Got a renewal notice for the bike insurance a couple of weeks ago for two bikes on one policy, a £46 increase on last year, so I phoned them up to advise I'd passed my advanced bike test. Guess what?

They added another £20 to my premium, that equates to £66 increase on a policy that was only £86 last year :eusa_doh:

Went elsewhere & it only cost me £7 more than last year.

Once upon a time obtaining an advanced qualification was a 99% guarantee of a massive reduction in your premiums as you were/are regarded a better risk.

Shows how times have changed.

That said, it does not really surprise me anymore. When I was in legal I used to write articles for a certain insurance companies website. When discussing ratings with their staff, non of them had any idea how or what advanced riding or driving was or how it made you a lesser risk.

There lies the problem

Perhaps they think “advanced” rider means a Barry Sheene level of skill now applied, we’d better load that! 20+ years ago it gave me a good 10% discount.

To be fair I used an insurance Co recommended by IAM who not only discounted my bike insurance, they also discounted my car insurance. I also got a good deal on travel insurance. So there are still some advantages to taking an advanced test other than being Barry Sheen a safer rider.

Wankers put our multi-car policy up by over £200 this year to £1,280. I phoned to tell them we wouldn't be renewing and they were miraculously able to drop it down to £1,008.

John Lewis put our buildings and contents up by over £20/month but a stern phone call saw that maintained at last year's price.

I now await my bike insurance renewal quote any day now as that's due on 10th August.

Following on, I had my Green Flag renewal through this morning. £20+ increase on last years premium despite not having made any claims or had any callouts.

Went online and did an online quote as if I was a new customer providing exactly the same details as they already had and guess what? Over £20 cheaper than renewal and cheaper than the premium I paid last year.

Guess who had a few choice words and got my renewal at the same as the online quote? When I suggested that they (and other insurers) are simply profiteering by banging up the premiums hoping that the majority would auto renew I got no comment from the other side.

When I suggested that they would have greater customer loyalty if they were honest and reasonable in the first place, I got a "Can't disagree with that" response, but its all down to the computer generated renewal notices. Yeah right!

Anyway, cover sorted for another 12 months......

I have a similar battle every year with AA. It has been agreed that next year will not change from what I eventually paid this year. It is sickening how they just believe people will accept ‘the price, is the price’ - not me!

When I called Sky this year for the annual ‘I’ll be fecked if I’m paying that renewal quote’ I was greeted with ‘thank you for being a loyal,Sky customer for 24 years’.

My response was ‘you can thank me for my loyalty by not treating me like a ####’

Well not exactly..it was ‘you can reward me for my loyalty by doing a good deal, for me similar to what a brand new customer can get’.

While I did ok I didn’t do anything like as well as previous years and it felt like they would let me walk if I didn’t stump up.

I think these companies don't care if they lose customers, in fact with my on going problem with BT their last email said I can cancel my contract with them with out penalty
