Basically...basically.... We, the component parts of what is known as Britain and the British, are far too complicated for the Americans to work out. Therefore they opt out and refer to the whole lot as England and the English.
The Irish bit.... well technically speaking, Eire is in fact part of what is know as the British Isles.
