Anyhow the point of all of this it took me ages to cut a cupboard template and then make it out of thin alloy

Looking forward to the pics of this.... What type of cupboard are ya mounting onto yer Birdie :-0)

I thought given all the luggage I carry I would start with a chest of drawers and if that did not prove large enough I would replace that with a wardrobe.
Well spotted or rather I can be a prat at times. I of cause meant cardboard.

Hold on quick spell check before I post.

Hopefully.....

this photo will give you an idea of how it was constructed. I used 6mm Alloy plate. The hardest part was shaping the brackets. to secure the top plate to the brackets I used some alloy angle and bolted through it. To ensure this was not taking the weight I sized the top plate to rest on top of the brackets.
Went to Box Hill with it on yesterday and everything ok. Apart that is from getting stopped by an unmarked police car.Thankfully he never nicked me.

To make sure it stayed safe I fitted nuts to the securing bolts.

:yo: Best I've seen yet, looks nice and neat. Not a critisism but does the box sit far enough back for the pillion?

BMWdumptruck....

I thinkk thats a good question and I did try and position it correctly but at the same time because I have told my insurance company I do not take passengers I was not overly concerned because I don't.
However I positioned it so that if I had a Top Box Passenger Back Plate any passenger would be ok.

However if anyone else wanted to do it that does carry a passenger it would just mean altering the position of the TB mounting plate holes.

As I said the hardest part for me was shaping the brackets so if anyone is interested in doing it please do not hesitate to contact me because I can email you the template.

No. Honda panniers are panniers only.[/url]

And after a few tries, yes you can, and for not too much trouble. Cost is around 140 euros - split as 120 for the SW-Motech top alu rack + givi fittings, and 20 euros or so for nuts, bolts, washers and fitting plates that you can find at your local DIY shop.

well if only i had my camera with me as i see a Honda rack that that had been

modified to take a givi top box and it looked spot on

same size tube as the rack they had made a hoop and welded it to the main rackgoing over the tail of the bike with two stays one on each side coming
down on the the two stays that the hoda rack has and they were removable
with captive nut and bolts

Looked spot on if i see it again ill get some pics

Hi GTV, and welcome to the site.

As a newby I'll be as gentle as possible with you.

Its a shame you didn't look at the brackets Hondated made, he offered a copy of the diagrams for them to anybody, and to be honest I still think they are the neatest solution.

Really don't want to upset you, but in all honesty I still prefer Hondated's brackets. I think I grew out of meccano in my youth, sorry chap.

That sounds like how I planned to do it on my Friends Blackbird before she died, and if I end up with a later bird with OE panniers, its how I'll look to do it. Pics would be good.

You still got the scan of the brackets hondated. Just got me some OEM panniers and want to have the topbox as well really.

And any pics of the finished article as the link seems to be dead now.
Cheers

Also does anyone have pics of the strengthing brackets as to where they mount? I got some panniers off of ebay but having fitted them and compared to the David Silver set this appears to be missing.

I'd chase the seller as they'll still be on his bike.

I'm trying that, but I don't expect to get very far as the bike was a right off, but didn't have the panniers on it so I imagine that won't come to anything. He's on holiday for a week or so as well now.

I'm not sure I'd worry about them too much. I've used a givi wing rack for years, have easily overloaded it although don't tend to have a pillion at the same time as all the luggage.
The givi rack only mounts at the grab handle and pillion footrests. The genuine panniers also use the front luggage bolts where the reinforcement is applied, so Honda use the grab rail, footrest hangers and the front fixing, but for just a smaller pair of panniers. Major belts and braces overengineering I reckon.
The only luggage problems I've seen on here have been a couple of top box's falling off of swmotech mountings.
Having fitted the Genuine panniers to a friends bike a few years ago, the brackets only clamp over the subframe, and to be honest any reinforcement is going to be limited unless they were welded in place which they're obviously not intended to be.
