HID as high beam experience?

I'm about to install my HID kit on my Bird on dip beam, and was going to stick a simple 100W bulb in the high beam. But I hear that some people are running HID on high beam too.

How does this work out in practice?

I know the HID takes a few seconds to come up to full brightness. Is this a problem when riding at night?

Also I thought I heard that HID systems fail much sooner if they are constantly switched on and off, as would be the case for a high beam application at night. Has anyone any experience or comment on this?

Regards,
John

My opinion :

Main beam HID at initial turn on is as bright as a halogen.... and then within a really short time it's even better.

On/off : it's the "hot sparking" that HIDS don't like i.e. on / off / on again within a short time. A flash seems fine coz you're not re-igniting it.

Of course the main get's a lot less use than a dip so I think even double flashing etc it would probably balance out.

Regardless of the above I'd fit main HID just so you get a constant white light rather than different colours.....oh and treat yourself to an LED pilot bulb to match too @tu*

Who supplies the LED side light?

Only today I noticed that my side light has failed.

my experience.

Ive used hids for years in both cars and also bikes. They are very good and in my opinion a must on a bike, anything to make you seen and heard is surly a good idea?

The only problem I have found is that as stated above, the dont like on/off flashing a lot and after 12ish months of using hid full beam the bulbs die. Still they are that cheap nowadays ?20 a year for hid full beams isnt that expensive. Just put it into you service costs...

It obviously depends on how much you will be using them, I live in a small village so am surrounded by country lanes so use them daily.

Hope that helps

100 watt bulb may not be a good idea, I tried it on my fazer and burnt some of the wiring loom connectors.

No problems on Bbird Kicker.

Myself and many others have used 100w on dip and main for years. Wiring is more substancial on a Honda!

If you ride any unlit roads main HID is a big upgrade. As for 'flashing' on the full beam, i am in the habit of letting it warm up for a minute or so when I start a ride and then switch off, lights up very quickly when flashing after.

HIDS are single best upgrade to a Bird IMHO - even if you don't ride at night car drivers can see you coming much easier. The main in Bird is aimed way too high as Foxie says above but HID does help massively. They also use less juice - 35w against 55w on standard bulb.

Been debating for a while whether to just put 100w bulbs in Dip/Main or upgrade to HID, is it easy to fit HID bearing in mind in a technothicky

Low beam burned out so I replaced both from local dealer. Big on line seller as well. Sit on the shelf under the lights, easy install, nice and bright. I don't dip to pass. Left lane hogs get full beam until they move over. "Keep right except to pass" it's the law in BC and most States.

Yup, plug and play on most units. Take the nose cone off and it is a simple job - 10 bolts and two plastic poppers to be removed.

Or ride across to JAWS.:-0)
