I am planning a trip to Wales at the end of August, this is the first time for me.

Looking to leave Essex day 1 (mid-week) around 10am travel up and find a BB, day two spent riding and second night in BB, back home day three.

Would appreciate any tips on routes, places to stay etc

Thanks

Phil

if you made Chester your initial destination, you could do good rides into north Wales, and maybe towards the Lakes.

If money isnt a problem recommend the Ramada Jarvis (close to motorway for getting into Wales) or there are numerous B and Bs. I have also used a place called Wickentree Farm in the middle of the Delamere Forest. Good clean, not too expensive and the couple who run are bikers. Delamere is on a relatively popular ride, and if you get that way you mustnt miss the old station cafe apparently (although I havent stayed there for at least three years)

North Wales? FFS - Only if you want numerous speed cops/camera's/copters and a mad anti-bike Chief Constable!!

Try West Wales instead?

Decent roads/bugger all speed camera's - and of course Stan and Blu!!

Have a look at maps.google.co.uk

Key in St Davids or Fishguard and look at the proper roads you could ride!!

A lot of the local lads meet up most weekends at the West End Cafe in Llandovery - good point to aim for

If you fancy the seaside there's always Tenby BUT end of Aug is a Bank Holiday and a lot of B&B's get well booked up

If you fancy a beer in Tenby, mate of mine [and a Bird rider] runs a B&B

I concur with Bluey. Mid-Wales is an absolute must, Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge on the A4120 (great pub called The Halfway on the right halfway between the two. They used to let us camp in their car park!). Then from Devil's Bridge turn right and go through Cwmystwyth (keeping an eye out for the majestic Red Kite on the way) and the silver-lead mine into the top of the Elan Valley. Allow plenty of time to explore there and don't forget to cross the submerged dam and visit the Claerwen Dam. The Elan Valley visitor centre is a great place for Welsh Cakes and Bara Brith and also quite interesting. Then into Rhayader, straight across at the building on stilts (watch out there as the rights of way are pretty peculiar and lorries turning are a nightmare!) then on to Crossgates. Hang a left for Newtown and enjoy!

From Llandovery, there's a beautiful road that goes to the Llyn Brianne dam and reservoir. Very much like Norwegian Fjords around that reservoir. From the top end of it, you can go left to Tregarron on some stunning minor roads and back to Aberystwyth, or right and go over the Devil's Staircase into Abergwesyn (where I used to live) then right to Llanwrtyd Wells. Pop into the Drover's Tea Rooms at Llanwrtyd on the right, just before the junction onto the Builth Wells/Llandovery road and say hello to Peter whilst you sample his Egon Ronay recommended food and drinks.

Yep, you could spend a good week exploring Mid-Wales.

Used to (and you really don't need to shout, Bluey), but moved back to Swindon 7 years ago. We're coming home when he retires though.

The Crossgates to Newtown road is ace but I think the plod have figured that out too 'cause the last couple of times I've done that route it's had speed traps and marked/unmarked cars infesting it

Hi Phil

Spent a couple of days in Wales back in June. Excellent roads, not nearly as many speed cameras as we thought.

We stayed in Colwny Bay, (Llandudno) North Wales the first night. B&B right opposide the beach. Lovely location, loads of restaurants and a fantastic bar that used to be an old theatre - really cool and trendy!

Roads - we stuck mostly to the A470 & A44 which was great in places. Though we were on a mission to get to South Wales to the next B&B so had to stick to the main roads.

Brecon Beacons were superb. Most of the roads were in great condition compared to the shit we have in South East England. And very little traffic too. Went through Snowdonia which was very pretty but there were loads of roadworks going on - hopefully they will be finished by the time you get there!

2nd night we made it down to South Wales, near Cardiff in a place called 'THE MUMBLES' picked only because the name sounded great. Nice B&B (The Shoreline) right opposite a car park for the bike. Found a great wine bar / restaurant called CJ's - worth checking out if you are in the mumbles.

Traffic thickened up the further south we went. From memory mid and further north Wales were more fun. A44 to Builth Wells was good if I remember rightly - but we covered a lot of miles that day...

Bala often gets a mention for some good roads in that area.

Personally I would rather book a B&B in advance rather than try and find one each night. I know its not a flexible, but saves any worry. Get a Sat Nav and you won't go wrong!

Good luck mate, hope you have a great time. :yo:

Thanks for the info, probably looking to head to Llandovery and explore from there. Plenty of places to visit but not enough time.

The road surfaces in Wales are always in far better condition the in England, but watch out for that SMA stuff.

That road to Builth, well there's 32 bends in the 5 miles between Newbridge-on Wye and Builth Wells. Counted them several times when we lived in Newbridge.
