Hello guys

I need help with a descion of what to buy?

between O5 VFR 800 Or 05 Blackbird wife thinks BB is too powerful i'm a bit concerned with VFR with stories about v tec some say good some say bad. I like look of both is the VFR going to have enough power? I am a novice rider with just over a year experience im in my thirties so have some common sense and have just sold my VTR 1000. I don't ride flat out but like the power there if i need it. Any thoughts would help as you cant trust bike mags. Is there any point having a bb if most time you will be doing the speed limit or just over :p

Thanks BB club:bow:

There simply is no choice to make.. The VTR is a fantastic track bike.. but simply impractical for the road ( and a tad slow )
The VFR is slow, has poor weather protection ( compaired to the Bird ) and is damned expensive to maintain

The Bird will do everything the other two can with ease, at less cost, and with less hassle.

As regards to the power, one point to remember is all bikes have the power to kill you, but some have better power to escape danger with.

VFR Vtech

As someone who owned a pre Vtech VFR and then tried a Vtech VFR for a weekend I would not touch the Vtech with a barge pole. Very crude Vtech comes in with a thump, sometimes when you don't want it to. It was a very wet weekend and I quickly learned to watch the rev counter when leaning over as the first time it came in unexpectedly the backend stepped out rather sharpish. Besides a VFR would be very tame after a VTR1000. Get a blackbird Brad. One of the fast blue ones!

I bought my BB just 15 months after passing my test and have never looked back (except when overtaking of course). I've now had it almost three years and can't think of anything I'd want in it's place. There are other bikes I'd like to try but there is no way I'd get rid of the BB for something else.

I don't know a lot about servicing costs but a mate of mine traded his VFR just before the 15000 miles service as its a ?500 job at a Honda dealer

Don't worry about the power, the bike will only go as fast as you want it to.

Bought my Blackbird after five months on a Deauville, and 15 months on L plates on a 125.

The Blackbird is a pussycat if you keep the revs below about 5000
Easier to ride than the Deauville, the 125 I had before it or the ER5 I did DAS on.

And then when you get confident you've got another 5000rpm to play with...

Slow

The VFR is slow, has poor weather protection

Am i missing something, 1st time i feel my viffer is slow i may consider something faster, been out with all tipes of bikes and its not happend yet.
I'm not saying you should go for the viffer, but its more than capable.
Not shure about the vtech though.
Good luck with your choice.

As Canary says, a well ridden VFR will be a match for a poorly ridden Bird, it is all down to the rider, wife's cousin was out round North Yorks on Sunday with his mates, Ady was on a 600 Bandit one of his mates was on a blue (slow) bird and the other was on a ZX12 they had to ask Ady to slow down. the guy with the bird has had it for two and a half years and has done 700 miles in that time. the guy with the ZX12 has had his for about 18 months and has never gone above 80mph on it.

i've never owned one but every one I've ever talked to who's traded up from a viffer to a bird says the bird is the best

from what brad says he not really interested in speed - derek quite rightly pointed out that both bikes have the power to kill you, and to get you out of trouble should the need arise. so the vfr may require more forward planning on overtakes, but nobody seems to have mentioned comfort...?

brad what kind of build are you? i'm 188cm (6'3) and find the bird very comfy. i have never owned a vfr, but i have ridden one. i found the bird more comfy, and the power delivery on my carbed bird is far smoother than that of the vtec (i cannot speak for the fuel injected bird - though i would be very surprised if the vfr vtec delivered the power anywhere near as smoothly as any bird).

on a road the blackbird can feel a little bargey compared with the vfr on small bumpy b roads - but that of course depends on what type of riding you do. where are you from in oz? what kinda roads are you going to be riding it on... or is it track days you want it for?

as jaws said - the vfr will be far more expensive to maintain - 16000 mile service  :h !!

do you intend to take pillions? on a vfr you WILL notice having a pillion big time... but i don't notice when i have a pillion on the blackbird (and not all of my pillions have been 9 stone beauties unfortunately!!)

if you have common sense, as you say you do, then the bird isn't too powerful - you just know how to use it better. good luck in your decision... in my biased opinion, i'd go for the bird...

Having ridden both thye older pre V Tech as well as the V Tech versions, compaired to the Bird they are slow.. And I stand on the weather protection issue.. It was THE main reason I never bought a viffer to start with !
Took one for a test ride .. All my sticky outy bits were soaked within 20 miles
At the time I was riding a YZF750 r SP which I had actually ridden to the shop in the same rain and even that gave better protection !

But yes, I shall amend my statement.. The VFRs are NOT slow, only slow agin the Bird..

Just out of interest Brad, have you posted this on the VFR site as well, or are you just after recommendations for the bird, to confirm to your other half what a brilliant bike the bird is.

Hello again guys

Sorry didn't reply but i posted it late it was bed time in oz.

That was a good point Derek made about posting it on bb site. No i haven't posted it on VFR site after wathching someone go on there and tell the viffer club that the aprilla futura was a better bike than the vtec - got a bit heated:eek:

To answer the question of where i would ride it definately not at the track, use it to ride to work which is 40km round trip sorry you will have to convert to miles i can't and on weekend jaunts with mates.

I want a bike that is going to last a long time and has the power when i want it and can be ridden normally when i have to.

thanks for your advice some very good points .k1ap

p.s. can you please return our ASHES!!!!!:bang:

My tenpenworth.....

After having a VFR800 (not the V-Tec) for about 6 weeks (before I bought my 'bird), I have the following opinions :

1) The 'bird is more comfortable than the VFR
2) It definitely accelerates quicker (no need to downshift)
3) It's easier to maintain
4) It easier to keep clean (too many nooks and crannies on the VFR)
5) It's a damn sight smoother (found the VFR very "vibey")
6) You hardly notice when there's a pillion on the back (oops..lost another)
7) It's just as easy to ride on the twisties
8) More miles between fill-ups
9) It carries luggage better (doesn't seem to affect the handling as much)
10) It's more stable in cross-winds

Im not saying the VFR is a "bad" bike - I just think the Blackbird is better

I think I've covered just about everything !

Having owned my viffer for over 5 years and going out with bird owners to spain, france whatever fuel consumption is about the same except mates blue un its not as good, as regards loading it up, most of you know me - and I load it up to the bollocks, our lass on back and I still run with you birdies with not much trouble to the handling.

Some of your points I have got to agree with but I can't just sit back and agree with all of them - it an't true. man8um
