Whilst I do not disagree with your sentiments, on the other side of the coin, genuine defence lawyers have a statutory duty under law to represent even the most guilty individuals to the best of their ability.

Now the term "Best of their ability" is subjective and I know a number of lawyers (from my previous life) who will pay lip service to that term but in reality give it scant regard because their view of their client is no different to ours.

I had these same views when I was nicking these scumbags, but when I changed from poacher to gamekeeper I learnt the other perspective so whilst I accept that there are those believe that everyone should be acquitted, they are the exception rather than the rule. They defend these individuals because they are obliged to, not always because they want to.

However, these Human Rights vermin lawyers? Now that's a different story

I was sat in Court in Leeds alongside a good friend & colleague who was accused of assault, the Prisoner attacked my friend & was put on his arse using correct control & restraint, the prisoner was a well known litigant & had boasted that he had only brought the charges as he didn’t like my colleague & wanted him sacked & wanted a bit of cash out of it, his lawyer was a scruffy greasy haired prick who did everything he could to make my colleague look guilty, luckily the Judge saw right through the fiasco & threw the case out, my colleague/friend had many years unblemished service, but stood there fearing for his future, the relief when the case was thrown out was evident on his face.
Apparently some of my colleagues were on the same train home as the Lawyer & made his journey very uncomfortable.
As regards to providing the best defence, I thought it was a matter of ethics that if you believed your client to be guilty then you refused to represent them.

Not the case at all. In the overwhelming majority of cases, how can the lawyer know their defendant is guilty unless they were there at the scene of the alleged crime? This is why we have the judge and jury system.

As much as I'd like to see these bastards executed like the scum that they are, everyone is entitled to a fair trial and that's the end of it.

Our society is built on innocent until PROVEN guilty. The bang to rights photographic evidence and DNA seldom come to light unless there's a trial.

Dezza, believe me when I tell you, I hear you mate, I really do. You've spent more time around this sort of scum than I have eyeballing tits, so you know better than most. I would love to see nothing more than the death penalty brought back for certain crimes but it has to be 100% conclusive after a fair trial.

Here is a seldom spoken about fact, although some innocent people were put to death, there have been more people raped & killed by freed prisoners,
Now technology is so advanced there is a very small chance of innocent people being put to death.

I can't type it all out again lol
But... what happened in Nottingham, I feel sorry for all those that innocently lost their lives in such a horrific way and to all their families. My heart goes out to anyone who witnessed it happen and to all those who had to deal with the aftermath.. police, ambulance, fire ,scene of crime etc etc. When this..... individual... appears in court, all of the above will have to go to court and relive their experience of the day again. It's hard to put it behind you. My partner had to attend a 5 year old girl who " fell down stairs " at home. To her and her crewmates it was obvious that this wasn't all that it seemed. The general rule of thumb is for a sick child.. scoop and run to the closest hospital... which they did as well as informing control.. long story short, the child was pronounced dead after some valiant efforts on the crew and medical staffs behalf. The mother and father were charged and as they were foreign nationals remanded... 2 years later the court date came up.. 2 days into the trial the father pled guilty to murder and the mother allowing the death of a child... they'll be sentenced next month in belfast..
For the whole 2 years herself had to hold on to everything she saw, heard,smelt, thought etc it was a fucking nightmare. When the child's father was going to plead guilty the barrister came and got her and the others who were there on the night to witness him pleading guilty to try and give them some kind of closure. They were the only ones. I picked 2 of them up later that night after they went to the pub... not to celebrate but to try and wipe memory away.. herself could hardly bite her own finger she was that pissed. Multiply that by the poor people in Nottingham whose lives and heads are going to be so fucked for the next few years.
Yesterday or the day before was the trial of the murderers of Alfie Steele.... a boy tortured to death by his parents.. I saw the footage of the paramedics dealing with the young boy... that'll stay with them forever. The boys father or stepfather was know to the police. There was footage of him being belligerent with police on a previous occasion... what a c**t I would put one in the back of his head without hesitation after what came out in court. I would volunteer to execute child killers.. glad I've got that off my chest. People say you become a bit more right wing as you get older but I've always said child killers should face the death penalty.. not as a deterrent but as a punishment.

when writing reports it was a requirement that we read the Prisoner’s records, anybody who says they aren’t affected by what they read are either liars or psychopaths, one of the first encounters I had at Wakefield was a Prisoner by the name of Brown, he was polite & looked a 40 something nerd, I read his record, he was a councillor tipped to be future Mayor of Newcastle, he was babysitting his four Month old Grandson, when his daughter came home he was asleep in a chair, his daughter asked where the baby was & he feigned shock that the child was missing.
Long story short, the baby was found dead in a bin outside the house, poor kid’s throat was clogged with his semen, he got five years.
