I see free speech is alive and well in Austria. David Irving is a pillock BUT three years in jail for saying in 1987 that the holocaust didn't happen is just a tad over the top. And we think the Arabs were over-reacting about the cartoons of Mohammed. Opinions???

Centaur, I dont even know where to begin. I agree with you that DI is a pillock and his views need not be taken seriously, but to put a man in Jail because his opinion is different? Its breathtaking to say the least.

We are living in strange times....

Tbh, I knew very little about him until today. Well, still don't know much about him really but there was a fair bit of discussion about him on R2 this afternoon.

Quite a few callers were asking for the key to be thrown away, reckoning he is an evil piece of work, basically saying that he thinks anyone not British is worthless shit that doesn't have the right to live.

So they said....... :dunno: :dunno:

Wasnt Austria the country that a few years back elected Jorg Haiders right wing freedom party into power?
And wasnt this the country that the EU refused to recognise as having a legitimate government as a result of a democratic election process?

I have no desire for any extreme government, either left or right, because they both end up killing people, but if democracy is the will of the people to elect their own government, then how can any other so called democratic government disagree?

Of course, the circle has now completely turned because the people of Palestine have effectively elected, by a democratic process, a terrorist government.

Could be interesting!

The chaps been around for many years now spouting all sorts of rubbish..... been through a number of court cases etc and has been chased by those offended by his views (which are plain nutty to say the least) through courts in the UK/America etc.

He has said some pretty stoopid stuff and as an "historian" published the same.... but hey what happened to (was it voltaire?) "I detest what you say but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it" (or somehting like that).

Austria seems to suffer from huge guilt from WW2 and it's right wingers...... but isn't it daft to outlaw what someone might say??

OH Tony... hafve you bin peeking at Austria's rule book??

Damned if I can remember the chaps name, but the editor of I Spy mag got 2 or 3 years for daring to print derogatory remarks about our glorious govt.!!

I am sorry to say that whilst we are always told we in the UK have freedom of speech, it just aint so and has not been since before Cromwells time.

well I think our "govenment" are a bunch of arseholes and want locking up, the David Ervine's of the world are just another bunch of arseholes that have been "playing" the system for years, and those in charge dont like it hence they set out to "get" him, but even now he is going to make money out of all this because of how "the powers that be" have got things set up for themselves!! if you REALLY want to punish the man just stop buying his books!! :dunno: easy really innit??

The phrase "Free speech" is used all too often to imply that we, the great unwashed are having our right to say what we want taken away from us.

This is not the case.
We have always had laws to ensure that no one can tell lies about somebody else, either verbally or in writing and get away with it.

Offensive statements and drawings are always open to interpretation and the UK laws and the law lords generally get the balance right. Other countries have their own invidual laws based on their history, culture etc.

It is the unusual or the extreme cases that the media love shove into our faces and that a minority love to exploit.

What fascinates me is how a very educated man (more than me anyway) can argue that something so pivotal in the history of the 20 th century didn?t happen.

It's all about belief. Some apparently educated people on here are still convinced the Blackbird looks good with pannier, topboxes, brown paint, carbon effect levers etc. And the hardest ot ceonceive is that Red and Blue bikes are as good as blackones. Even the Pink and Primers owners have convinced themselves that their bikes look alright. EFi owners convince theirselves that their bikes are as quick as a carbed one. It's all about belief.
Many moons ago, when the colour battle was raging, I suggested that all those owners who were convinced their "colour" was fastest should load them into a skip and tip them off Beachy Head to see which "colour" hit the ground first. As far as I remember there were no takers. Are we now going to have to do the same with carb and Efi birds too?

There is a big difference between belief and delusion
