Hi All,

Myself and a couple of mates are off to Europe (for the first time on bikes) this summer and we are getting the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. From the minute we get off the ferry we have 6 days to be back in Amsterdam.

We are planning to nail it down to Munich in one go, Google is saying 8 or 9 hours to do 500 miles. Has anyone done this journey or do you reckon that is too much?

We then plan to spend 4 days in Austria, Dolomites, N Italy before having one more massive day back to the ferry in Amsterdam.

If anyone has done a similar trip, do you have any suggestions of places we have to go to or is this too much for 6 days. Any help appreciated

Cheers

Kempy

Just back from the Bikers Oracle tour which covered the Austrian Alps and Dolomites.

500 mile days are possible if sticking to motorways, but without maybe 300 - 350 miles is enough in my opinion

Mr Bean, have you got any tips for places to go in Austria & Dolomites?

Our 500 mile day would be from Amsterdam to Munich which is all autobahn, surely we would do it quicker than 8 hours? That's how long google maps suggests it would take.

We stayed for three nights at the following hotels:

Sporthotel Weisseespitze
Familie Hafele
A-6524 Kaunertal, Platz 30
T +43 5475 316

HOTEL GRAN PARADIS
Str?da Dolomites 2/6
38031 Campitello di Fassa Dolomites
Tel. 0039 0462 750135
Fax: 0039 0462 750148

The Austrian one is a BMW test center where for reasonable sums you can rent a BMW for the day.

Both were very bike friendly with secure parking and each had suggested routes for the area.

Couldn't really comment on the time taken to cover the 500 miles.

How long have you allocated for fuel/coffee/food stops as you will all be restricted to the same as the smallest tank/bladder range?

Mr bean,

Cheers for that. The place in Austria looks great, we could base ourselves there for a couple of days and do some of their recommended routes.

Where is your photo from looks amazing!

Stelvio

I think it was on the way up the Stelvio - there were so many great roads.

We followed the Top Gear 'Best Road' route and it was great. TBH after you do a few hairpins they look pretty much the same - but the road from Davos to Italy was brilliant, you could not ask for more.

It depends how much long want to stop for lunch etc, it's nice to have 10-15 minutes off for a fuel stop to relieve you of the motorway monotony.

I reckon 7 to 8 hours is comfortable including a few 15 minute stops.

I've not done the dolomites but done a couple of black forest and Alp trips (number 3 starts a week on friday) and once the initial motorway blast is out of the way we'll do about 250 (give of take a bit) miles a day of alpine passes and back roads.

Depends whether you want to just spend the time just riding or be able to relax and stop and enjoy the scenery along the route.

We're doing 2000 foreign miles over 7 days.
