One thing that did confuse me for a moment was the new wiring colours on armoured but it wasn't a problem once I'd asked & looked it up ;)

European homogenised colours! I still find it confusing and I have to work with it!!! Can't beat Red, Yellow & Blue with Black as the neutral. Blacks a phase now!

As I understand it part P only says work must be done in accordance to the rules by a competent person IE anyone with half a brain :p getting it signed off is really a bunch off toss as it only really matters if you come to sell the place & then you or you buyer will be getting a survey anyway & the sparky gets a stupid amount of cash for plugging in a tester

If I'd have took (industrial sparks don't have too) my Part P I'd have been quite happy to take that wedge of cash for sticking on a tester!

We're doing up my mum's place to sell on and I've just had to fork out for a rewire as I'm not up to date with the regs!
They seem to have become quite lax in the earthing of equipment because of the RCD's that have to go in now.

PS. Beaker, another reason why you shouldn't rely on youtube, as who is to say it is following the most up to date regs!

One of the reasons you now have to fit a metal clad consumer unit is because of the fires that have started in them because people believe they can 'Do It Yourself'!

The YouTube reference was intended as to how to fit a gland.

Are there any electrical gods in the house?
I want to bury a run of some twin and earth around 25 metres in length to an outside weather proof socket. At the shed end it will have a regular three pin plug and be plugged into a standard socket, go through the wall and buried in the ground and appear around 25 metres later in the garden where it will go into a IP66 dual gang socket. Do I need up-rated twin and earth? Essentially it is going to be a more permanent solution to running an extension lead out.
Anyway, back to the point....

These pictures should give you an idea of one way you can do it - this is simply connecting armoured cable to ordinary twin/earth - in this case the twin/earth goes straight to its own RCD in the consumer unit. The connectors are Wago - if you want to keep your existing socket you will need Wagos with five terminals rather than the three in the picture. Either way drop me a PM with your address and I'll send yo enough five connector Wagos to do the job - you'll need to buy way more than you need otherwise...and whatever you do do not buy them off eBay as the market is awash with counterfeits.

The box is a Schneider and the gland for the armoured cable are both from Screwfix. I had to make up the Earth connectors for the glands (you will need one at the business end as well) but kits are available with these already made up..for a price!! The gland clamps round the outside of the armoured cable (which is the Earth) and the earth from the t/e is connected to this to provide continuity.

Someone mentioned above using three core to provide a 'double earth'. Don't quite get this myself, armoured cable is designed so that the outer sheath is the earth but I don't suppose it does any harm...in the same way that carrying two spare wheels in your car rather than one can't be a bad idea:D

Also think about the opportunity for adding toys at the business end.....the reason I ran armoured cable is different to you in that I wanted to install amremote control system that I could use from the house to switch outside stuff on and off...the addition of a 13amp socket is a bonus. At present I only have a water feature hooked up but it's ready for garden lighting and pond paraphernalia in due course....

And remember, you always need someone watching over you in the garden.....may I introduce Taffy...

Ps I used 4mm cable although 2.5 would have done...not much difference in the price.

Very nice that. But in future may I respectfully suggest that you use 3 core armoured so that you have a separate earth. What you have will work but the idea of earthing the metal sheathing is to prevent any problems should it become live at any point. A separate earth will also maintain the integrity should the armoured sheathing become damaged.

Your fence needs painting.
