MPs urge motorcycling drive

MPs have delivered an "on yer bike" message, urging more Britons to take up motorcycling.

Under the banner "Biking is Good for Britain", the All Party Parliamentary Motorcycle Group (APG) said there should be a fairer deal for motorcycling in Britain.

The call came as figures showed that more than 150,000 powered two-wheelers were sold new in 2004.

The number of people killed or seriously injured in motorcycle crashes rose in 2003 but early indications are that 2004 will show a significant fall in casualty numbers.

Liberal Democrat Lembit Opik, the APG's chairman, said: "As Britain moves into 2005, it is clear that despite all the negative publicity - and often alarmist and inaccurate media coverage of motorcycle safety - motorcycling is offering more benefits than ever to people in the UK.

"This is clearly being demonstrated by ordinary people 'voting with their wheels' and switching from four to two for commuting journeys."

The Montgomeryshire MP went on: "Adding it up, it's obvious that biking needs to be included as a serious and major part of the Government's approach to congestion and pollution.

"2005 can be the year that ministers live up to Labour's promise to put motorcycles at the heart of the transport strategy.

"And we in Parliament will be doing all we can to get this message across to colleagues and to the public in the year ahead.

Any comments guys?? :dunno:

Wow.. anyone would think there is an ellection looming or something..
Lets do some quick math.
150k units sold.
For every unit sold expect 142 exisiting units ( dont ask me where that figure came from originally ! It was in a publicity hand out )

so 150,000 x 142 = 21,300000 potential voters with an interest in what is being said.

Devide that by half cos the average turn out is 50 % and devide that in 4 cos lots will not read that and lots will not give a feck and lots more are 16 year old ped riders gives us around 2,662,500 potentially influencable ( if there is such a word :p ) voters..

On the disk world on the last continent ( Forecks :p ) they put their MP's straight in prison as soon as they were elected.. when asked why Rinswind was told 'it saves time'

It really is a damned shame that pimples do not really grow on lairs tongues, or their noses do not really get bigger ! I bet a lot more folk would watch live parliment on telly !

Ok discussing...

The reason spares, insurance, etc cost a fortune is that we are a minority.

More bikers, = more demand = more competition = cheaper prices.

And. the elitist attitude against born again bikers is a bit sad. 40 year old middle class people tend to have a bit of buying power and are probably responsible for prices of bikes falling for a good few years now.

Lastly, I had a yamie RD 250 as a kid...everyone did and we were fooking bonkers. 2 of my mates died and we were a menace to everything else on the road (great fun though). Now if you take accidents as a percentage of the motorcycling population, I'd like to bet there?s a lot less now than then.

They would be better off concentrating more on new car drivers that have recently passed the driving test, how about limiting them to 1 litre cars of 50bhp that dont sound like a Big Bertha on the Somme as they drive by. Limit them to 40 mph maximum speed for 12 months as they learn to come to terms with thier new toy.

That way the youngsters might get pissed off in a car and then turn to learning to ride bikes and eventually become upstanding respected members of the community like wot we is !! man8um

Wolfie

Is a lunp
everybody who wants to drive a car should be made to ride a moped for 1year, then a 125 for another year, then when they have some road sense they would be allowed to learn to drive a car if they wanted too.

All motorcyclists should be forced off the road,

unless you have pushed a bike home for 5 miles, taken all the skin off yer knuckles, sliced yer arm open, sleeped with your bike cause it has broken down and it is too far to push, got at least one black leather jacket, got at least 1 tatoo and two ear rings/tit rings/knob rings, like proper music, promise never to wear a dayglo vest or belt, and pretend to be mean then sorry you should not be allowed on a bike until you meet the above.

if they realy want more people to get on a bike then force the insurance companied to lower the costs for the young uns ?1500 for a feckin 125 scooter is miles too feckin much.

Sorry Lumpy

I'd have to disagree with a few points here

Motorcyclists / Bikers, used to have a bad name due to the antisocial nature, now we are getting a bad name for accident rates and antisocial filtering etc.
We get a bad name cause we genuinly scare car drivers who are just bumbling along using the roads to get from A-B. Because bikes are so quick they cannot accuratly judge our movements because they haven't their own experience to judge from. filtering through trafic causes a scare in someone generaly because they do not use their mirrors correctly.

I don't think most of the riding fraternity are against born again bikers, although a crap rider then will be a crap rider now. The more 'muppets' you get on bikes the less healthy it will be for the most of us as legislation is introduced to stem the mass genocide.
Everyone can learn given the time, inclination and proper tuition to use the road not pass the test.

Spares are costly because of the number of units made pro-rata not the amount of us.
Hence if the number of users rise so does the number of units in circulation = reduction in price due to investment in mass production of parts

Insurance is expensive due to the risks as well as the part prices, third party compensation is massively more expensive than fixing bikes and it is this that predicates insurance more than the spares cost. If you have ever needed a car repairing you would realise the pro-rata cost for this is significantly greater than a motorcycle.
A motorcycle will cause a lot less third party damage than a car traveling at the equivelant speed due to the increased mass. With lower numbers using motorcycles there is a smaller pool of insurance contributers to pay for the losses of individuals.

New motorcyclist, like the arse I cam across this morning, on things like Bandits are a fookin liability due to the arse laws that let people pass a test and then ride whatever they like. These people are normally easily recognised by all new matchin kit and no fookin road sense. Given proper hierachal training the idea of mass motorcycling could work.
Definatley road sense shoud be taught with more emphasis than just passing the test, although it's still a lot easier to get your hands on a car license than a full bike one due to lack of this for a car licence.

I'd agree with Wolfie everyone should be made to ride at least a moped before getting near a car. Teach some twats a bit of awareness for other road users and the space around them.
And my final tuppence worth everybody should be forced to risit at least every ten years to keep up with changing traffic and vehicle conditions.:k
