Customer Service

Many of the threads on this site with respect to customer service are normally followed by a good rant, using words like ?crap?, ?nonexistent? and suchlike. Often well-deserved I might add.

I?ve recently been looking for a radar detector mount to replace my home made jobbie and a fellow Down Under 'bird rider (a motorcycle cop surprisingly enough :p ) recommended www.motorcycleradar.com. They had a multi-purpose radar/GPS/Mobile phone mount so I ordered one over the ?net. The first bit of good news is that it?s a superb bit of engineering using machined alloy with an adjustable Teflon universal joint. It bolts to the clutch or brake lever clamp using longer bolts and 2 spacers. However, the truly staggering thing was that I ordered it in the middle of last week and it arrived from the USA on Saturday.

I guess that sets the standard for everyone else to follow and have no problem putting a plug in for these guys with service like that!

Hi-jacking

w;;v Sorry to hijack you thread here Geoff, Must say the produce and service sound great. Just to introduce myself, I?m Davey Uprichard (aka Freebird), I ride out with Clive and the Cloggers :yo: , and my wife and I are thinking of immigrating to NZ  . I was just wandering if you had any advice or any information that may come in handy. I?m a professional engineer, that is time served and professionally qualified. I much prefer to work hands-on (spent to long stuck in front of a PC :xm ) and was wandering what job prospects are like out there?

Many thanks

Sorry again

Regards

Hi Davey

You won't believe this but this is the 3rd enquiry I've had in a week from bikers wanting to emigrate, and fellow 'bird owner Easey Rider arrived in the middle of last year - what's going on????? :p

I'm a professional engineer too, although not working as one at the moment. The good news is that engineers of all types are in strong demand. The bad news is that you ride with Clive and presumably have northern origins so that disqualifies you :xm

Seriously, if you email me some details of your work history and what you're thinking of, I'll do my best to give you a good start with some possibilities.

Jennie and I have been here for just shy of 30 years and have never regretted the move, but it's all down to personal values and needs I guess.

I was on the verge of moving to NZ 20years ago but family commitments stopped me (TWAT)so wish I'd done it.
I suppose I'm too old now at 50 old fart and wouldn't be eligible.

Don't think 50 is too old - depends how badly you want to move and whether you have the skills which are in short supply.

Our move was pretty much an act of faith which paid off.

Geez Ian...

Is the Pom perception of NZ is that it's like Britain in the 60's, god forbid? :p . It ain't all low tech y'know - we did hold the America's Cup until last year and even then, Kiwis sailing for the Swiss took it off Kiwis sailing for NZ :rolleyes: Oh yes.... and the Britten race bike and a few other things besides but the mild rant will stop here :}

I'm sure I saw a vending machine in Auckland once.

Seriously though (as long as you are!), the things are everywhere.

I'm not even going to ask why you wanted to know as I'm sure there's a minefield I'm about to step into.

Yep, still a prob so here's the message (albeit a bit light-hearted)!

Love it! Not sure what's worse, being Irish or a friend of Clive's. Hmmm... it would have to be your taste in friends.

Well you can start by telling me what your background is and I'll tell you whether there's a decent fit for any bits of it. I can point you to some good websites as well as giving you my personal angle so that you get a balanced perspective.

You've probably had mixed reports because the climate is mixed depending on where you are. From the middle of the north island northwards, summer temperatures hit 30 C+ in summer with only a handful of slight frosts in winter. Still warm enough to grow citrus trees in most areas. I'm in the central north island at 400 metres altitude and we might get 10 frosts a year down to -3C. No snow at all were we are. As you move south, winter temperatures fall although it's still hot in summer. Good frosts in Christchurch with snow generally confined to the hill suburbs on a handful of days per year. Dunedin in the deep south has winters closer to the UK but not as bad. This summer hasn't been all that flash to date because of the El Nino weather pattern but having said that, the last 2 weeks have been fabulous with about 1mm of rain! A broad generalisation is that the rainfall is twice that of the English Midlands with half the number of rain days, so when it rains, it pisses down!

I'm at our place at the beach from Friday afternoon to Sunday night NZT so will catch up next week.

BTW, you don't have a relative over here by the same surname do you? There's a classic book on pulp and paper making chemistry in NZ by a Dr. Uprichard.

Cheers for now

Geoff
