Broadly speaking, most people are so titsed off with the whole covid thing that they're just going to do whatever they please. I can see the same happening here in a few weeks when Comrade Drakefordski lifts restrictions (assuming he actually does).

It's more a case of people look at the crowds at sporting events such as Euros and Wimbledon and say sod it why should I be penalised when Bo Jo and that lot do what they like.

Had an email earlier, our cruise from Argentina to Antarctica in February next year has been cancelled because of covid restrictions. It seems that covid is not over.

Personally I am avoiding going abroad for at least the rest of 2021; the possible risk of the status of the country being visited isn't worth it to me. We are well ahead of most countries in terms of dealing with the pandemic and I am also mindful that other countries may well be behind us in terms of the virus impacting; the scientists have been saying for ages that comparisons between countries are largely meaningless for this reason. Australia sadly appears to fall into this category judging by what is happening over there at the moment.

we have booked to go to The Isle of Wight in September; the hotel have already been in touch saying they are struggling with staffing, partially but not solely due to the need to isolate.

Much as I'd love to go abroad (was thinking of Malta or the Canaries) this year, we've resigned ourselves to staying in the UK and are unlikely to go anywhere until mid September.

My partents were due to go to Cornwall & had boked a nice little place on a mobile home park, about the only place they could find that would allow them to take the dog. They booked it in March this year for mid August. It was booked through a reputable travel agent, who got in touch with them last week to say the site had cancelled their booking. They went on line to see if they could find anything else in the area only to find the same 'challet' was available but for three times what they had paid.

The travel agent has now booked them a cottage near Margate a definite upgrade, for 10 days rather than the 7 they originally booked for no extra cost. They were offered a place in Weymouth but they were there 3 weeks ago & didn't fancy going back so soon.

I agree Margate isn’t The Garden of England’s finest, it’s a lot better now than it was ten years ago.

it’s still in a beautiful part of the country.

At the time of the last major eclipse of the sun in this country, 1999 if memory serves, Cornwall was the place to be. As expected, establishments tripled their prices for accommodation. The lowest of the low was one place contacting a couple who were getting married at the time of the eclipse (and booked the previous year) and telling them that they were going to cancel their booking unless they paid three times what they'd been quoted, money grabbing wankers.

I doubt it's exclusive to Cornwall, though. I can imagine the same thing would've happened in most other parts of the country. Thing is, I doubt many would be too bothered if their hotel in Barnsley was tripled to £6 a week.

I was in Cornwall for the eclipse, not far from Bodmin Moor. Stayed in a pub in Camelford. I knew the owner as I'd stayed there pretty much every year for the previous 4 years. She put me the (then) missus and my dog up for £10 per night B&B. The catch was I cooked my own breakfast if there was a lock in the evening before, but then I also served behind the bar one night too when she was short staffed. A couple took the room next to us & were charged £35 room only. It was definitely a case of 'who you know'.
