I can always rely on this site.......

to make me feel OLD !!

Anaseed balls and Blackjacks - used to get 4 Blackjacks for a hapenny (halfpenny).

Farthings were slightly before my time but (excitingly) they used to turn up in change every now and then !

Didn't like Blackjacks

but Fruit Salad were 4 for a penny, Refreshers a ha'penny each. Penny and tuppence bars of Cadbury's Dairy Milk. Fry's 'Five Boys'. Nux bars. Tiffin. A ha'penny liquorice stick with a ha'penny bag of sherbert. Duncan's Walnut Whips. Nicking me dad's Buttered Brazils (only at Xmas!) Callard & Bowser's Butterscotch. Needler's Fruit Drops. Bright yellow, red-coated Pineapple Rock from Teddy Gray's and their Fishes. Their Coconut Mushrooms. Ooh and Troach Drops - but I didn't like them at all. Having Smarties doled out by the 8. (there were 8 colours, see, so that was what you got) Or a slice of Crunchie, Or a slice of Mars, Or a slice of Bounty. My big sister still remembers the day sweets came off ration, my dad giving her the money to go and buy herself a whole Mars bar.

No good asking Pete - his Granny had a sweetie shop, so he never even realised they were on ration!

We also used to get some 'Toblerone shaped' fruit ice lollies - any one remember them? You had to sort of roll them vigorously between the palms of your hands to unstick the wrapping! or Walls Kreemie (sp?) lollies - banana or raspberry? Walls also did a lolly that was coffee ice cream coated in chocolate with crunchy/nutty bits in - what were they called? or Walls 'Heart' lollies. Ben & Jerry - forget it!

Actually they had a limited run about 2 years ago of many of the old choc bars, Aztec included. Apparently it was to celebrate some anniversary of the factory or sumfin.

I bought 5 whole boxes all for me ............... mmmmm!

Think we should start a campaign to bring back the good ole days?!

WHY OH WHY OH WHY cant you get coffee walnut whips anymore?

Black jacks are still available

Old aniseed balls used to have an aniseed in the centre, new ones dont.

You can still get flying saucers.

And I (as a kid) also used to eat OXO cubes.

Strange what people eat

My cousin when she was having her firstborn used to eat coal and Persil washing powder. Not sure if she eat the persil to make sure her teeth were clean afterwards though, she always was a clean sort of girl.

I used to drink vinegar, my mum used to say "dont do that it'll dry your blood up" - bless.

Jubblies or Junglie Jim's were brill in the summer, they lasted ages.

What was that candy tobacco called?

A lot more recent but still long gone was that powder that popped in yer gob - was it called space powder? Brilliant if you gave some to the dog, it would close its mouth then open it to the sound of fizzing, his ears would pop up and a puzzled look on his face. Laugh? I nearly bought a television licence.

hmmmm. I remember

When I first started smoking, you could get 10 cadets ,10 Sovereign or 10 Players no.10 for 1 shilling and 10 pence.
Fish and chips were also 1s and 10d.
No 6 and Embassy were a bit dearer and them great big long king size were just coming in.
Awful long time ago and yet in some respects seems just like yesterday.
Good god , Im turning into my Dad.
He can't remember what he did this morning but he could tell you what he had for tea Spring Bank Holiday Monday 1947.
