Seeing as we've only one airway into our lungs I wouldn't have thought this was possible :dunno:

Our ribs operate our lungs like a pair of bellows so it's either one way or the other, in or out. Can't be both ways at once can it?

I think (I may be wrong) that circular breathing was used by the Abbo's in Australia for playing the digereedoo [sp] Seem to remember Rolf Harris explaining something about it...

Ahh - what you guys are talking about is completely different. Yes, you can do what you're now describing, it's just muscle control Andy.... but no-one can breath in and out at the same time!

I think another one, whatsisname, the jazz trumpeter used to do it quite well cos he had such stretched cheeks he could hold a lot of air in 'em.

hi wolfie, i'm a clarinet/sax player for a living, and although i haven't ever had to do it myself, and know many people who do use the technique on a regular basis (there was a chap from mexico city in london for a while - he had to - couldn't get through a phrase at that altitude without it apparently! )

i''ll try to explain...

although the general opinion is that circular breathing is breathing in and out at the same time, this is not actually the case. what actually happens is that you store the air going out in your mouth (by puffing out your cheeks). whilst breathing in through your nose, you squeeze your cheeks together, so pushing the air you have stored in your mouth out, so keeping a continous air flow leaving your mouth. the best way is to practise with a straw in water.

it sounds confusing, but it's pretty simple. i don't know of anyone who's spent time trying and not been able to do it.

breath in normally
breath out, and store some excess air in mouth puffing out cheeks
whilst breathing in through your nose, bring cheeks back into normal position, pushing air out
continue breathing out until you need to do it again - store air in mouth...etc

hope this helps. good luck!

r2b2 - loads of jazzers do it:beer:

Its a quite common thing that is done by wind and brass players but it is bloody hard to do well.
The easiest way to explain it is like drinking a pint in reverse.
When you drink you close youe nasal cavity at the top of your throatand use your tongue to suck with, as you pull it backwards in your mouth you draw liquid into the space it has made. Now if you push it forwards again it pushes it out. If as you push it out you breathe in through your nose that is the basis of circular breathing. Next you need to try it with air and not beer but by this stage you are probably pissed and wont be able to do it anyway.
To be honest most players look on it as a partytrick and it is of very little use in the real world of playing, you would do much better spending your time learning to breathe better and play for longer with out resorting to it as a serious technique. Any player who is any good should be able to play for about 3 mins without taking a breath unless they play the Tuba!
