Charging Stator Problem

Hi guys,
I know it?s been asked before but just need to check before ordering replacement items.

Was out on bird yesterday stopped and started a couple of times ever thing ok. No problems up till now. Left bike parked for around 2 to 3 hours and when I returned it wouldn?t start. Managed to bump it with help of friends rode home 95 miles stopped and started bike ok check volts at battery showing 13.2 volts left bike till today (Monday). Checked volts at battery 13.1 volts started bike check charging getting around 14 volts so started to check using Jaws Guide. So what I found was generator output voltage on the 3 yellow wires around 30 volts all equal at 2000 rpm but when I checked the yellow wires down to earth at 2000 rpm got 16 volts on all 3 so do I take it the generator stator coils are faulty and need replacing or is it something more.

Bike is a 1997 owned from new 53000 miles yes I know it?s not a lot of miles in 19 years spent a lots of time looking after ageing parent?s. Stator is original as is rec./reg. so thinking will replace that and get a new battery that?s on its second one just to be on safe side.

Hi Malcolm.

If you are getting a voltage between a yellow wire and earth with the reg/rec unplugged then the stator is fecked. End of story no matter what anyone else may suggest. 8rfl@ Replacement is a simple job but remember to order a new gasket. Most alternators fail because too much load is placed on them by a weak battery IMHO so replacing the battery is a good idea if it is a few years old. Only real way to test a battery is by a load check and not just by checking the voltage. If money isn't tight then the new mosfet reg/recs as sold on here by Jaws is a worthwhile investment.

As the bike is getting on and the wiring will be corroding internally this would be a good time to connect the reg/rec output direct to the battery via an in-line fuse on the positive side, bypassing the existing wiring. This reduces the work done by your new stator! Halfords sell 27 amp wire which is ideal. :-0)

Totally agree with above, particularly replacing generator, reg/rec and battery. Personal experience suggests replacing one will simply lead to another component failing in the short term. 19 years service from those components, they don't owe you anything.

Also JAWS is your best source for parts.

Hi thanks for reply yes it was with rec/reg disconnected as per jaws info on here, and after 19 years it's good seeing what I've read on here as I've looked the problem up. So Karen /jaws it is replacing the 3 items don't think I will be riding the bird in another 19 years at 84.
1 other thing I,ve always used an Optimate charger yes some say they are bad but worked for me for the last 19 years because bird has a Datatool veto plus alarm fitted from new for insurance purposes don't forget they where the fastest kid on the block when they came out,anyway read on here they don't help with electrics so does anyone know how to remove or bypass them.
