I've just had my bike serviced by a big Honda dealer in Malaga as specified by the service book. They asked me what oil was in it and I said I didn't know but I would like Castrol GP semi synthetic.
I went to get the bike and the bloke at the workshop handed me a container with Castrol GPS which I believe is a fully synthetic oil and in doing so he has knocked my next service back from 12,000k to 18,000k.. as far as I could make out he was telling me that the Castrol GPS was the best you could get and would last longer between services... for those English speaking amongst us.. wot's the difference in performance of synthetic and semi??
Cheers Paul

specialists experts will be here any second now but synthetic is a NO NO in the bird, Honda specificly specifies mineral or semi-synthetic so who's gonna argue with the engineers who created the bike? A lot of know-it-all that's who!

Castrol GTS is a semi synthetic oil, it is the same brand we use and seems to work very well for the Bird.

Synthetic is too slippery on engines with wet clutches causing them to er slip under load
I've been using gps which is a semi for the last 22000m no problem
Shit colour though (red)wish it were blu

I have heard of a little story, someone helping someone else during a service, and someone refilling his bike with old oil.

I will not mention any names

Well not for less than a tenner anyway. :}

Update on the oil saga

Having read the replies on the thread I went into the garage and got the two cans of oil and this is what each one says
1) Castrol Grand Prix:- A high quality semi-synthetic 4 stroke engine oil for motorcycles. Longer protection of engine and transmission parts suitable for all makes of 4 stroke Japanese and European motorcycle engines, running on either leaded or unleaded fuel.
The spec on this can reads SAE 15W-50, JASO MA, API SG
2) Castrol GPS:- Castrol GPS extreme protection is a new synthetic based lubricant for the last generation 4 stroke motorbikes. It assures max performance and superior protection and lubrication at highest temperatures.
The spec on this reads SAE 15W-50, API SG, JASO MA.

So, the spec seems to be the same on both cans albeit in a different order... so chaps do you reckon they are the same oil?? and shall I start panicking yet?
Answers on a postcard.........
Cheers, Paul

Different oils.......... the codes on the cans mean that both meet or exceed Hondas requirements as per the genuine Bird workshop manual.

I didn't know there was a special oil for furniture casters. Bloody hell mother. What will they do next? Try castor cycleclips. :k Get a spellchucker. seriously I think the devil is in the detail. A synthetic BASED oil is not a fully synthetic oil. It is semi-synthetic. (In my opinion) c7u8

Unless it's Castrol m8.... since about '97 Castrol stopped using polyalphaolefin (the synthetic base) in its "fully synthetic" oils because the found a way of modifying mineral based oils to give similar properties at half the price of fully synth bases, they then label this as fully synth and rip off their customers by charging the same as fully synth. So whats really in your can of semi / fully synth :dunno:

My GPS can says "Synthetic Technology" on the front making you think it's fully synth, but when you check the back it does say semi synthetic. They altered the labels a bit back and I had to check it twice to make sure I'd still got the semi .

Update

Thanks for all the replies.
Read a bit more about it and I think the GPS is no more than an updated version of the Grand Prix oil.
Cheers Paul.

Most 10w/40 semi synthetic oils should be alright, but as for fully synthetic don't bother unless you r going to spend most of your time on the track racing
