OK - so what the real deal?

Is there a difference?

Let start the [serious] debate?

Having owned both types I guess I am in a good position to compare.
The EFI ones are WAY more juicy.. Best I have ever got from the EFI is about 45, best from the carbs 52
The Efi ones SEEM to be a little twitchier and tend to be less forgiving than the carb ones ( if you measure the two, there is a differnce in castor angle twixt the very early birds and the EFI ones, even though that is NEVER mentioned or even Acknowledged by Honda !! )
The finish on both types is excellent, though I have never liked the black wheel look on any bike, and on the Bird it really is, to me, a blunder on Hondas part. The Bird is a BIG slab sided, plain looking bike. In fact it has gotta be one of the most understated designs around... Having black wheels as per the carb version makes it look ( to me ) bigger and heavier than it really is.

I reckon the brake bias on the later bikes is a lot better. Cannot remember the percentages, but must admit that the later bike does stop nicely ( not that the old one did not stop well you understand, just the 'feel' of the brakes on the newer bike seems better )

What else.... oh, the reg rec on the later ones is a slightly better design, not relying on a contact area to disipate heat, but being equiped with more ally heat sink and some finning...

Of course there is also the issue with ( particularly ) the late 1999 and Y2K bikes re the left hand exhaust can... Although the sub frame is within tolerences it is often far enough out to cause the l/h can to JUST touch the swing arm..
There was so loads of bullshit floating around as to the cause ( heavy passengers, centre stand clouting the rubber stop, bent footpeg hangers etc etc ) , it is a shame that Honda did not just admit there was a ( very ) slight problem which is easily rectified, instead of all the crap !!

So, given I have had both, what would I have now if I could chose..
Might surprise you to know I would most likely plumb for a carbed one.. but only if I could have it with the later wheels and Y2K blue colour. :-:

Well....

But Jaws, why the carb one, is it just the handling?

PS what the fook is a 'castor angle twixt ' when it's at home :dunno:

Now my prefference, if it's just a choice between the two would have to be the Titanium one cos it looks sooooooooo luveley :k especially after stripping the swing arm down and cleaning all the nasty grease and poo of it :lick: shiney shiney shiney.

Not just the handling mate... also the gas consumption.
As I tend towards fairly long rides ( I have been known to 'pop' to Liverpool, Minehead and such places... something like 400 miles round trips, and just to get a bacon butty or somesuch :} ) fuel economy is quite important to me...
PS what the fook is a 'castor angle twixt ' when it's at home
The angle the forks are in relation to the frame... The early ones stick out further ( only by a VERY small amount ) which makes the bike a litle easier to ride when I am in lazy mode :-:
I have never seen this mentioned anywhere, and it only came to light when I had cause to have a bike frame checked for alignment..
It was hung on the rack ( the frame ) and the guy sort of went.. ah, you seem to have a problem, the headstock is out..
His mate came up with a big thick book of words, pointed at the spec for the 96/97 models and then told me all was fine !

Hmmmmm

Ah ha, i see (said the blind man), so the extra power of the efi holds no interest with you as it would with me. Hey, i understand that its a small amount but when racing the doc up the drag strip every little bit helps :h

So the efi ones dont need such a big ride height spacer either then? The castor angle twixt affects the handling in the same way i pressume?

Wellllll...............
With a pretty big tail wind, the carb'd bike I had went thru the timing lights at 184.6 mph.. Quite obviously that was a one off freak incident caused by VERY favorable conditions.. but it did it nevertheless !
Best top speed from the current EFI I have ever seen is 174 mph ( indicated speed in excess of 190 )

Now I aint sure if you are taking the wee wee a bit XX !!
The word TWIXT when used as I have used it means inbetween..
nowt ( nothing ) more !!
And in fact it is really the opposite in that ideally a carb bike might need a 1mm bigger spacer to get it up to the same effect as a 6mm spacer has on the EFi bike..
But in all honesty I am being pretty damned picky and it is proly not something most folk would ever notice.. It was only the fact that I literally jumped from one bike to the other that I could detect any difference... And thinking back, even that could well have been the fact that the older bike had proper tyres on it ( 57's ) while the new one had the dreaded wooden D205's on !!

misread

Nooo, i wasne taking the wee wee, i asked what 'castor angle twixt' was and you told me so i pressumed the twixt bit was included....honest :dunno:

regarding the spacer thing, i think you will find that i had it the rightway round, you must have misread :t for what it's worth.

PS your not being picky as we are discussing differences and they are differences never the less.
