A nice little route from Calais heading south to Toulouse for those wishing to avoid the boredem and tedium of m-ways.
From Calais head towards Sangatte and the D940 coast road.
Follow this all the way to Boulogne sur Mer and continue on to Etaples and Berck remaining on the D940.
Continue on the D940 to Rue and onto Ault.
Continue on the D940 towards Le Treport but pick up the D1314 to Londiniers and onto Neutchatel-en-Bray.
At Neutchatel-en-Bray pick up the D921 to Forges les Eaux and onto Argueli.
Then continue onto the D321 towards Lyons-la-Foret and onto Evreux on the D316.
At Evreux pick up the D830 L'Aigle.
At L'Aigle pick up the D930 to Mortagne-au-Peche and onto Belleme.
At Belleme pick up the D7 to La Ferte Bernard.
At Fert Bernard pick up the D1 to St Calais.
At St Calais pick up the D9 to Svigny sur Braye & onto Chateau-Renault then pick up the D31 to Blere.
At Blere pick up the N76 & head towards St Aignan (a lovely little place for a stopover).
From St Aignan head south on the D675 and then onto the D975 all the way to Le Dorat.
At Le Dorat continue on the D675 and head for St-Junien.
Before St-Junien pick up the N141 and head towards Limoges.
At Limoges pick up the D979 towards Eymoutiers and then pick up the D940 to Tulle.
Continue on the D940 to Bretenoux.
At Bretenoux pick up the D673 toward Gramat.
At Gramat pcik up the N140 to Figeac.
At Figeac pick up the D922 towards Gaillac.
At Gaillac pick up the D88 towards Toulouse.

This took two days of about 7/8 hours riding at a spirited pace, with the usual fuel, coffee & lunch breaks.
From Toulouse if ya heading over the Pyrenees there are many options so I'll leave it that.

Done most of that as far as Eymoutier - the people who used to run 'The Donnington' at Scarborough have a nice gite not far from E - I think it's called 'The Donnington'.

In France we tend to go where we're going using M-ways and then spend 'quality' time in that area then bomb back up to the coast the same way. That D940 along the top coast is mostly a cracking road, but is hardly 'traffic-free' when the French are on holiday!!

If we actually want to get somewhere - we find we tend to get a bit side-tracked if we don't do that!!

I went to Bradford today, up the M1 to the M62, along to the M606, and off toward the Richard Dunn centre, I stopped off and had a brew and a "bun", saw who I had to, and returned along the same "amazing" route, it took me about an hour and a half round trip, I can recommend it to everyone,

I think there is a tad of pizz take there Ian.

Think the piont is that country roads are better than motorway or autoroutes.

If your gonna use motorways - get a car.

Stayed at the Donnington with a few boys from here and it sure is a nice spot. To me, part of a trip is enjoying the journey there, and I would be soooooo bored if I had to use m-ways that it would detract from the trip itself; then again I'm self employed so I can take as long as I want as long as I dont mind not earning!

Hey, Joe

Did you go up that rather nice road from the main rd up to Lac Vassiviere? They had literally just finished resurfacing it when we were there so there were 'Graviers' signs on every bend (another sign said 'Z bends for 16km' - so there were quite a lot of those) and also the bike (Trophy) was having an intermittent elec prob at the time which was dropping it down to 2 cylinders with no warning then picking up again with no warning, so I can't say we were really able to give it very much!!! (think Pete would have risked it if I wasn't there LOL) - but would have loved to.

We were staying at a camp site in the middle of nowhere and one morning we went down the lane and turned left, there was a buzzard sitting on a fence post which took off and flew along parallel to us. I felt I could have reached out and touched it. Absolute magic.

If you mean the D43 to Lac de Vassiviere; we sure did :yo:
Also the D992 from Eymoutiers to Nedde is worth riding several times over :} .
However, by this time tomorrow I will have ridden my personal favorite road in Europe; the road from San Pedro de Alcantara to Ronda in the province of Malaga is incredible. Unfortunately it's now employed by so many European bike mags for shoots and manufacturers for their launches that it's not as quiet as it used to be  We fly out to Malaga tomorrow where two hire BMW 1150 GS's await us; should be interesting!

Never stayed the same place twice on this route as I just go with the flow these days and plan as little as possible so can't help with BB. However, there's always so much choice in France I shouldn't worry too much!
