BUYING A BLACKBIRD

Hi everyone!!

This is my first post as I've just joined. I'm looking to buy my first Blackbird so I need some advice from you guys as to what to watch out for!! I'll probably buy the fuel injectected model something like a 2000/01 model. Are there any pitfalls or are these bikes as good as people say.

I'm getting away from pure sports bikes but still want something with power but also comfort as I now wish to do some touring.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated plus if anybody knows of a bike for sale let me know!!

Cheers!

Hi and welcome nebster, I have a 2000 FI bird, freaking awesome, got a problem with the reg/rec as soon as I bought it, replaced it and would advise you to do the same - also I heard a rattle from the moment I bought it also, thought it was something somewhere underneath in the dark that was doing that, then I thought, out of precaution I'm going to order our good man John Jaws an upgraded one, fitted it (that shows how easy it is to fit!) in no time, and rattle miracurously died, making the engine as smooth as a nubile stripper's legs. Oh also, the printed circuit behind the clocks burnt but apparently it's a freak situation that virtually never happens - might have been triggered by an off I had last year, followed by a 2000 miles ride in the most aweful weather you can imagine... Other than that it's just absolutely awesome, I commute with it in London virtually every day and it's surprisingly agile for a bike that size, it does as many miles in a day as you can muster without killing you, it can be balistic if you want to, and it can even take the twisties despite what joeR1boy will say! :k

Hi and welcome to the mad house.
I bought my FI BB just over a year ago and since then its racked up 13,800 miles virtually trouble free apart from the CCT  , this set me back under 50 quid and took 10-15 mins to change.
The bike is everything i would ever want, i've had the best times on this bike and with a club the size of this there is no end of assistance, rideouts, banter etc (just watch out for FAT BERT though, especially from behind as he's a FUDGE PACKER!) :f

Welcome

Hey Nebster dude! w;;v welcome w;;v .
I bought my Glory red 'Bird about 3 months ago and haven't looked back since, the only thing that you may need to keep an eye on is the fact that the speedo runs out of puff at 180 mph, but the bike doesn't :yo: (on the digi ones anyway), but seriously, just watch you dont get stung with a pre-registered model for full price (bastards, feckin nearly.......), its the 10th digit on the VIN no. that tells you (1 for 2001, 2 for 2002, y for 2000). But most of all, enjoy it! man8um

Thanks STEVE, the old girl is a 2000 model registered in sept 2001 and gets ridden... The shine comes from AUTOGLYM super resin polish, apply it, leave it on for an hour or so then buff her up. :yo:

and it can even take the twisties despite what joeR1boy will say!

get ya facts right if ya gonna quote me mon ami.
I never said it wouldn't take the twisties. In fact anyone that rode with me when I had my blacky will tell you I had no problems with twisties :f
When ya come out for a solo ride some time, then perhaps ya can show me exactly how well the BB takes the twisties :k

Nebster, given the needs you describe, the BB will suit them very well. I had a 2001 injected and covered 23k miles in 2 years without a single problem. Front fork seal popped once, the front end has no sussy adjustment so that can be a problem (depending on ya riding style) and the ground clearance can be any issue if ya get leaning it over properly, but no a real problem for ya less than average rider like me.
Change of front springs and a rear spacer sorts those issues out'ish.
Shedding the cans and replacing with a 4-1, looses ya 30kg instantly which gives the bike a different feel. Other than that, the tank paint is a bit soft, so you might wanna consider a tank cover and the brakes will take a little getting used to after standard brakes, otherwise it's a sound machine.

Joe that was just a light-heated comment :neenaw: - and I would show you how well it can take twisties if I knew the roads - and don't worry, the bird still would have enough power to tract you so that you could stay with me :f :k
