Broadband providers

Just bought the wife a new computer now she wants broadband, sooo....
who would be the best provider and does it matter if I'm using a wireless router.
We'd just be using it for faster internet surfing and the occasional download.

Explore this site Gerry. It rates broadband providers by compiling feedback from the buying public - so it's unbiased.

I used it extensively a couple of years back when desperate to get out of the clutches of the dreadful AOLHell, as I didn't have the knowledge to know where best to go. The provider I chose from the ratings on this site (ie - the public) has been faultless for the two years or so I've been with them.

Interestingly, the mainstream providers are often identified as the poor performers........

You get five alias's though...

I haven't read up on it for a long while now but I seem to remember something about adding further mailboxes for a small charge?? Not sure though.

I'm with BT Openworld and its been OK - certainly no problems so far. I started on a 512kbs connection which I thought was quick (much quicker than dial-up at least). They've upgraded me twice - first time to 1MBs and then to 2MBs both times for no extra cost. There's not much difference surfing at 2MBs, but e-mail downloads and general web downloads from the internet are significantly faster. AFAIK there isn't a download limit either.

Don't go with Talktalk, via carphone warehouse, they are crap, cut offs, unable to connect, poor customer service.

I was on BT Openworld, now BT Business Broadband 2MB uncapped. Obviously I pay for what I get, as I use it all day every day for working.
I still have the USB modem they gave me in a box, and plugged my own wireless ADSL router into the wall. It works fine once you get hold of the extras settings they don't tell you, like encapsulation, VCI, etc.

Bulldog are still in the shite, and those using BT should be aware that their servers keep getting used by spammers ( feck all security as far as I can work out ! ) and as such are often on other pops hit lists..
If your with BT and folk say they aint got the email you sent, it might be as well to believe them ! :p

I'm with BT as well no problems. Been upgraded as well 512k to 1MB to 2MB.

also Use Tesco broadband during the week there Helpdesk leaves a lot to be desired but the Broadband connection is ok for a for a reasonable cost, again you get what you pay for.

A good site for reviews on Broadband is www.Net4Nowt.com

I'm using wanadoo as they give up to 8meg (or the fastest you're line can do) at no additional cost - 14.99 per month.

Interested in what was said about BT - they need to market that as they lost my custom because they wanted to charge more once it went about 512K.

I was already using using BT for unlimited dial up @ 15.99 per month but would have proly stiuck with 'em for broadband but for the increasing prices for speed.

The wanadoo thing has worked fine so far for me and I've dropped the BT to pay-as-u-go dial up to use on the laptop when I'm not at home - as well as a Tisacali dial up pay-as-u-go.... gives me some options on the move. Havn't tried the BT dial up on the move so not sure it will work as they say you have to enable caller line ID and can only call in from your home number. Tiscali works form any number.

I was with 'BULLDOG' and to say i was extremely unhappy with them is an understatement    .
They put me on their new 8meg service and then found i couldn't access it because of the exchange or something and then refused to let me go back to the original as i was "In a contract". A bit of advise from a solicitor sorted it out and now i'm back with AOHelll as is Emma and we find it very good (i was with them for 3 years previously without fault).
Its a minefield out there and i'm gonna stick with what i know works for me.

Excellent advice. I've shooed plenty of alternative broadband providers from the front door in the last 12 months. They all claim amazing price cuts, but at the end of the day I want 24 hours a day reliable service. I think the DNS servers at BT have been down for a sum total of 2 hours since I went to 2mbps a year and half ago.
