I now have 'NORTON 2005' works a treat.

how strange,

found zonealarm firewall to be excellent and nortons antivirus to be utter utter crap.

use zonealarm firewall and AVG antivirus + spybot, and check every now and then with trend, sheildsup to name a few others.

Have a feeling you didnt set up ZA properly. All my friends and family run it and it works a treat. I use Linux so I dont have to run all that crap. Just a hardware firewall and a bit of hardening on the server.

Oh, by the way, I am a software engineer of 25 years standing (and occasionally lying down) and most people at work use it too.
