brake disc ?'s

Now it's brake discs I'm looking for. My right front disc has a bit of a warp and so I"m considering my options. As a newbie, naturally I don't do anything without consulting this board!

Should I

-Replace only the right front disc with a matching Honda original?

-Replace both left and right discs with original Honda discs?

-Replace both front discs with EBC discs?

-Replace both discs with some "other" pattern disc?

-Do nothing and live with the warp?

Any advice anyone has on this topic would be greatly appreciated. As discs seem to be in short supply and rather expensive here in Hong Kong, I would also be interested if anyone had any info on ordering a set from abroad. What sort of prices are out there for these things?

Thanks in advance for any input!!

Dont see how

you can live with a warped disc it was bad enough when one went on my car so on a bike it must be awful.

There were quite a few treads on this issue if they were on the coffee shop your screwed as they have all disappered but try the help forum as they may have been on there and thats still all there. If not I`m sure Jaws or somebody who knows will get back to you ASAP

Common sense would tell me that you should replace both discs at the same time as you should with pads.............

How come you've warped one disc?....................not the classic ride off with a disc lock in place!............noooooooooo!

Wolfie

Is a lunp
replace both discs together, name of manufacture is up to you, i have in my time bought all msorts of makes, and the only one i did not like was steath or something like that as you have to use there reckonmend pads or the discs shag up aqgain very quickly.

i would prob go for the ebc or somebody like that as that is their business. so should know what they are doing.

Some additional information ( I don't have much)

The Bird is a 1999 version with 37000 K's on the clock. I bought it used less than a year ago. I don't know much about it's history, but under the agreement with the dealer who I bought it from there are a few issues that needed resolving (under warranty from him).

These included a shudder under braking, particularly at speed. Initially a warped disc was ruled out as unlikely, so after replacing the head bearings, and the fork bushes to no avail, the problem has finally been diagnosed as a "slightly" warped right-side disc.

The dealer has said he's willing to replace the right side with an original Honda disc, or both discs with EBC.

If neither of these options are really deemed good by you guys who know better, I'm certainly willing to pay extra to put it right. Anything else I can add?

Thanks again for this great forum, I will now search the help forum for any other info.

Hmmmmm..... well, if these are the only two options, I believe I would go with two new EBC rotors. Nothing wrong with them; EBC makes good stuff. Take a look:

I agree

With Warchild,, get both done with EBC by the dealer,, surprised me the dealer didn't notice it B4 especially after you told him about the shudder under braking,, it ain't rocket science is it.

Hope you get it resolved.

Happy New Year

Gotta agree with whats been said b4... EBC rotors are pretty damned good quality, so def worth replacing both with new items..
Chances are the problem was originally caused by some dimwit refitting the front wheel without doing the spindle etc up to the spec. torque settings.
That would cause one or sometimes both calipers to be mis-aligned which in turn would cause a pad to rub, run the rotor hot and warp it..

BTW guys, there is a further option for those not lucky enough to be able to get a freeby replacement..
If a rotor is only slightly warped, it is often possible to have it reskimed at a small engineering firm. Cost is usually about 25 gbp.

I don't mean to come off like a complete ignoramus, but, as they say, if the shoe fits... here goes-

Anyway, is this misalignment of the calipers something that will just as quickly munch away at the new set of discs as soon as they are put on? How should I ensure this doesn't happen? What's involved in checkingfor/fixing this problem?

One other (perhaps related) tidbit. I have noticed that if I turn the bike to the right all the way and roll the bike backwards there is a periodic sound (each wheel rotation) coming from the front brakes, something is rubbing. Please note this is with no brakes engaged whatsoever. :h

No need to worry Slide, as hopefully when the new rotors are fitted the mechanic will refit the wheel as per the book ( full instructions are given in the little handbook you get with the bike, including torque settings )
It is unlikely you have anything to worry about re that rubbing ( though of course without actually having the bike to hand I cannot possibly say for def ).
You must remember there is no such thing as return springs in the callipers, and the pads are very often JUST touching the rotors.
What is of concern though, is that it does it in only one direction !
That could indicate that a wheel bearing is a bit unwell !

Hey John, have a slightly warped front disc so... are you discounting them to ?85 at the moment? Does that include the center? Do you have black centers? How much for a rear one while I'm at spending Her Majesty's money? Also discounted? Where is happiness and would a GPS help find it?
