this is a real shame. Back in the late 90s I loved the BMF, lots of manufacturers there, good traders, proper bargains, good entertainment, good atmos, and the sun always shone :-0). These days most of these events are all the same. The recession has killed the main dealers and big sponsor driven fun (big names, like Honda, BMW etc) and we are now basically left with an overblown car boot sale and the stragglers. I stopped going to the BMF around 8 years ago, then in 2010 I talked a mate into going, in the vain hope it would have improved (as they said it had), and, it hadn't. Sad really, but a snapshot of the UK right now. Maybe I'm getting old(er) and cynical, but things ain't what they used to be. I know people still make the effort to do the NEC show in November, but that hit its peak in about 1999 / 2000, I don't know what the answer is, maybe less shows, but then the traders wouldn't survive.
I've been to 2 x county shows in the last 2 weekends, and I'm tired of seeing the following
solar panel salesmen
burgers at £4
small handful of chips for £2.50
instant coffee for £2.80
those Jamie Oliver stalls manned by mumsey birds, flogging his overpriced tat
beer tents that do fake beer (nitrokeg) at £3+ a pint and Guinness in a can for £2 a pop
sunglasses stalls "any pair £5" just don't look hard for a CE mark.
that garden furniture that looks like it's made from old Salvesen pallets
tool stalls that have either a 1,000,000 piece Draper set for a bargain, but you only have a small ruck sack, so, you pick up a bundle of tie wraps for a £1 instead
magnetic / copper bracelet sellers (thanks to my wife for that one)
the water purifier guy who tries convincing you that the UK water supply is worse than that available just outside of Chernobyl
those stalls / tents that have an area for members only, but they just sit there all day talking to their mates, which is really anti-social and uninclusive and defeats the point of having a show and trying to have fun and expand your horizons. I genuinely unintentionally ended up in the Honda owners club tent a few years ago. I was just chatting to this guy and he asked me to come in and have a coffee etc. So we did, then he was called away to do a "grip and grin" with someone else, so we settled down to just sit and finish the tea and cake we'd been offered, but then some guy who had the air of "committee member" came over and asked us to leave. So we had to stand on the other side of an 18" high picket fence in the same fucking tent and finish our tea ..... pathetic. And reader, that's what I love about this country ......... the irony
