Blueyonder wirless help

Okay you buffs, help please.

I'm on blueyonder, using a motorola Sb4100 Surfboard connect to the PC via USB2.

I want to install Netgear wirless to get my lads pc sharing the internet.

However, netgear uses Ethernet cables, not USB2, so when I connect it up following the instructions (to the ethernet socket on the back of my pc) it tells me it cant see the IP address.

So, I suspect I first of all have to make my pc work via the modem using the ethernet connection, but any idea how I do this, or do I have to install a network card?

Its all as clear as mud to me?. :bang:

Clear as Mud!

Allan,

Your explanation is garbled and vague..... However....

If you have an ethernet socket (RJ45) on the back of your PC, then it's a simple case of setting up your Netgear to use an IP address in the same subnet grouping as your PC and then setting up the lad's PC's to the same grouping..

For example IP addresses starting from 192.168.254.1 will use a subnet of 255.255.255.0 - so simply make sure your PC, Netgear server and other connectd devices use 192.168.254.2/3/4/5/etc... and make sure they are all bound by the same subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

In theory this will work, but you have to make sure the PC that's connectd to the main internet router allows "Internet connection sharing through this PC" otherwise your boys will not be able to see the internet.

(Vague answer as I'm not sure how you're set up at home....)

Thanks lads for your help, here's the run down.

On Monday bought from PC World a Belkin Router and wirless usb adapter (Router for my PC , the USB bit for my lads PC to get him on the net).

After hours of farting about it and getting nowhere I phoned Telewest who told me that the wiring diagram supplied with Belkin gear is wrong, and then told me how to connect it. Good start eh?.

So having connected it up the right way, I spend more time trying to get the PC to see the router. But got no where, so I phone the Belkin help line.

I get this bloke on the other end who I couldnt understand, he was either French or Indian, but it was blooky hard to tell which, the upshot being that I could hardly understand a word he was saying.

After an age of him suggesting this and that we get nowhere and he gets quite rude, well not rude but condecending and downright awkward, so I thinks to myself, bollocks, if that your after sales service, you can shove your gear as far as it will go.

So today, I took it all back to PC World and x-changed the lot for some Netgear stuff. Okay it cost a bit more, but right away you can see its better gear.

I sets it all up etc and fires it up but my PC still wont see the router, so I phone the Netgear help line.

This time end up talking to a guy with an american accent who knew exactly what he was doing, guides me through the 'cmd -run' options and set up, and within a couple of minutes, the things up and running - brilliant.

So Belkin 0 :tosser: - Netgear 1 happy customer. :yo:

Now - how the hell to I set the wirless bit up on my lads PC????

Just kidding..

I use a Belkin ADSL Modem/Router hardwired (ethernet) to my main PC and then use the USB adaptors for mine and the wife's lappies. Doddle to set up, there's even a set up wizard - it almost does it for you - you just need to enable a WEP key for security which you input once the first time you use either of the laptops or any new device on the network. Stepson even browses the Net from his attic bedroom on his PSP too, works very well indeed.

Need to know exactly what the'wireless bit' is that you're gonna use on the second PC................is it a USB wireless adaptor like the belkin one you had? Or is it a PCMCIA card for a laptop? Do you actually have a bit of hardware to use with the second PC yet?

Ya Bastid! There's me thinking how I can help you get the lad's PC online and I didn't read the "just kidding" end to you post!

Take it you're up and running then?
