Bloody cyclists

As some of you know i am extremely pro cyclists on the road having a good deal of pedalling history behind me. Generally I will defend their right to use the road, recognising that at times they can seem a little selfish as a result of the need to ride in a defensive manner in view of their vulnerability to all other forms of traffic.

However, yesterday I felt like getting out of the car and giving one a slap. What happened was that I alng with 30/40 other cars were held for a long time at a raiway crossing (at Teston for those that know it). We had been passing cyclists with no problems for the previous few miles all in the same livery so presumably enjoying a club run on a lovely sunny morning in the idyllic lanes of The Garden of England.

As we sat at the level crossing the cyclists all came up the outside and formed a large group at the front of the queue. No problem, that's what I would have done. I would also have waited for all the cars to go before moving off, both out of courtesy and personal safety.

The difference was that when the gate finally opened the group all moved off as one at the head of the queue to tackle the fairly steep hill that runs for about 2 miles along a road that is barely wide enough for a car to pass either way at the best of times.

Inevitably the cars were moving at a snail pace and only able to overtake as the group began breaking up on the climb, picking the cyclists off one or two at a time when possible on the windy, hedge lined road. This was bad enough but what followed was simply ridiculous.

I had picked off a couple and managed to go about 50 yards up the road to the next group who were really struggling. I was down to about 5 miles an hour waiting for a safe place to pass. The two that I had already passed made up the gap to be behind me and I was astonished to hear one of them yell 'Get a move on for F***s sake you w****r' at me. At this point my window went down and I suggested 'shut your mouth' might be an appropriate action at this point.

I then got a further torrent of abuse which I was really struggling with - I couldn't go any faster as I couldn't overtake. At this point potty mouth decided to overtake me which was a bit of an effort and thought it would be sensible to throw some more abuse and spit at the car on the way past. As you can imagine I wasn't having that. When I caught up with him I overtook (safely), pulled in further up the road to wait for him to have words.

This is where the unbelievable bit happened - he saw me, stopped, thought about it for a few seconds then heroically turned round and rode off back down the hill!

What was good was that a few of the cyclists who witnessed his behavior made comments about him being a knob, etc.

The thing that struck me after is that I am a pretty docile personality who doen't get annoyed easily (but it isn't pretty when I do) - there are tons of people out there on short fuses who might easily have got involved in something really messy in this situation.

So, the moral of the story is...??

Think I would have followed him back down the hill in the hope that the barrier had come back down. As for the spitting....that is disgusting...will take any amount of verbal but when it comes that there is just no need:wank:

The moral of the story is:-
All lycra clad pedallists are twats of the highest order and a good case for the legalisation of compulsory euthanasia.
I.e. put them out of our misery.@tu*

Let it go, as long as the dickhead didn't damage your car, life is too short to bother with tiny minded individuals like this, however, if you do come across him again punt the fucker off the road, and give him something proper to think about!! :dunno:

Just saying!!:-0)

As others from his club saw what happened, how about contacting the club and ask for a written apology from them for their members behaviour ?

It is unlikely ( though possible ) you will actually get a response, but as others will know who this spunk bubble is, he will at least get a dressing down and a warning to behave when with the club.

It MIGHT wake him up a little ( though my experience of this 'type' indicates they are actually so far up the moron tree it will not sink in ) ( nowt like a mixed metaphor is there LOL !! )

If I'd been the cyclist, I'd have turned around and pedalled like fuck away from a self-confessed Clive Woodward lookalike too, you ugly git!

John, worringly, I agree with you. I have had a poke around on t'interweb to sde if I can identify yjr club but no joy. Pale blue top with a broad white band/hoop presumably based around Maidstone/Tunbridge Wells area if anyone can shed any light.

By the way, I have no qualms having ruck with someone wearing cleats, they would be pretty helpless8rfl@

The nearest cycling club to Teston is the San Fairy Ann CC. Was it these colours?

Nope.

Pale blue with a broad white horizontal band.

But I did time trial with the above in the past - cracking club:yo:

I cycled with SFA as a teenager. Got well and truly into time trials, did well in some junior competitions but on joining the army it was difficult to continue the training regime. That said I did compete a few times with the RAF but by then bikes, beer and wimin were taking over my life. I still pedal now but certainly not at the level I was at all them years back.

I'm sure the club that that individual was representing would not be impressed with his behaviour and I'm sure it will be commented on amongst the riders.

Driving the horsebox back from Stockport today, as we were coming over the tops there was a lorry followed by a car then me.
The lorry indicated & overtook a cyclist giving him a wide berth, the cyclist started shouting & shaking his fist at the lorry, the car passed him without provoking a reaction, I then overtook him giving him plenty of room & got the same reaction as the lorry.
Total nut job with an apparent aversion to lorries.
