Blackbird Cut out, Wont start

Hi, I?ve owned my Bird for 12 years. UK, 2000, HISS, injection model never missed a beat other than two replaced voltage regulators. 34000 miles ish I think

Returning from TT this year it cut out. Was running perfectly, it didn't show any signs of any fault, then just cut out. I had it recovered to home.

At the moment the ignition lights come on with the key. Engine turns over , but the fuel pump does not prime. I've checked the plug on the left side of the wiring harness which had signs of corrosion. Ive soldered the 10,3,3,3 wires but the fault is the same. All the lights and indicators work etc. I've checked the tilt unit under the seat which appears to work. I've checked all the fuses with a multi meter, the ones next to the relays and the one on the starter relay.

Turning the ignition key the engine stop relay clicks. Switching the kill switch on the bars also operates the relay. I've swapped this with the fuel relay which functions the same. I've also bridged the fuel relay and the fuel pump works but the engine doesn't fire.

Also the red F1 light remains illuminated and the green key led doesn't illuminate.

I have bought from ebay a ECU including keys and ignition unit, however when I fitted this the green 'key led' doesn't go out and the bike doesn't fire.

I would be grateful for any advice, or anywhere I could take it.

Cheers

Martyn

Thanks for your reply,
I'm on hols at the mo, but I'll take a look when I get back.

I'm hoping it's something simple. It's my fault I'm thinking of getting a new bike but I didn't explain to the old Bird that I'm going to keep her too !!

That could be it then, your Birds having a HISSy fit.

Sorry, I'll get me coat h1d1ng2

Try checking the HISS wiring under the ignition barrel, they often rot and separate!!:dunno:

I've tried the spare key. with the original ECU the green led doesn't light up at all on the instrument panel. I'll check the wiring when I get back home.

The ECU I bought off ebay has the ignition switch included and I've used that ignition switch when I plugged the new ECU in. However the green led light for this one doesn't go out so there may be a fault with that. It also came with 2 keys.

I've also read not too have different keys too close which may cause issues.

Hi, if it turns out to be the fuel pump, I have one you can have for free (postage cost). Might be worth trying

Good luck

Thanks Grant,
The fuel pump is working. I bridged it out so that the pump operated turned the engine over but it didn't fire.

Again a very simple one but have you checked spark? On all 4 plugs?

If a Coil pack went down that could explain it.

Simple way offs king for spark is to squirt a healthy dose of Easy Start down the air intake and turn it over, if it fires for few seconds then does you have spark but no fuel

When I turn the ignition on the fuel pump doesn't prime. I have bridged the pump which works. I've run the pump and spun the engine at the same time but no life .

Ok so things suggested to this point and known things tested:-

Fuel Pump - Tested, relay bridged and pump running
Even with this running, turning the engine over still does not catch
Immobiliser - None installed other than factory HISS
ECU - New (2nd hand) one purchased and tested, slightly different symptoms but still no joy
Spare key for existing ECU - Tested - no change
Spare key for new ECU - Tested - no change
Tilt switch - Tested - Working
Starter Relay - Tested - Working
Kill Switch - Tested - Working

Loom Fix - Done?
Coil Packs/Sparks - Not Tested?
Easy Start squirted down intakes - Not Tested?
Side Stand Switch - Not Tested?

HISSy fit - Highly likely...

I remember a guy on here/youtube (cant remember now) who had a BB which would not start under its own power, he had to jump it to get it to start up even though it was cranking more than fast enough for a normal working BB to catch.
Im not suggesting you do this just pointing it out.

I also remember someone on here quite recently that had a very similar issue, will try and find the thread.

Just a thank you to everyone who has posted on this thread. It's appreciated that you've been taking the time to post messages !!

I've tested the side stand switch by putting the bike in gear with the side stand out and it doesn't turn over. As soon as I put it back the engine turns over.

I've soldered the loom terminals 10,3,3,3. I'll check over the weekend that all the soldered joints are good by doing continuity checks.

Just to reiterate the original ECU the green LED key light isn't illuminating, I really can't say if that was the case before the bike cut out. The replacement ECU the key LED illuminates but doesn't go out !! I've tried the original and spare keys

The fuel pump still doesn't prime.

I still seem to think it's still an ECU fault but would like to exhaust all other avenues first

Looking on ebay 2000 model ECUs are like hens teeth.

Cheers

Hi all,

I've re-checked my loom fix. All joints appear fine. I've continuity checked the joints and seem ok.

I've tested both the fuel relay and ignition relay with a battery and multi meter and are ok.

Tried easy start but still not firing.

Fuel pump still not priming

Does anyone know where or if I can get my ECU HISS unit checked or where there is one for sale.

Cheers

I am still a fan of looking at the wiring under the ignition switch, follow it back a bit you may find it's blackened and broken, Murt had a similar fault recently though his bike is not HISS, others have also found rotten wires under the ignition barrel!! :dunno:

I've just taken the bars and top yoke off. The ignition switch was clean and dry. The plug connections behind the screen and fairing for the HISS and ignition are clean and dry too..
