Black & white, and almost brown

Went out this afternoon to scrub a new back tyre, ready for the Meet in the Middle ride-out tomorrow.

Went along one of the regular local country roads with plenty of bends to get the tyre up to temp.

Outward run no problems. Quick coffee at a cafe then start the return run with confidence in the new tyre building.

Halfway home, barrelling round a corner and PHOOKIN 'ELL, wall to wall b&w fresian cows crossing left to right. Stopped about 10 yards short, waited for farmer Giles to bring up the rear, and off we go. Pat on the back for the emergency stop.

Then see a roadside sign with flashing red lights 'Cattle crossing road when lights flashing' - brilliant, have the sign AFTER the event.

Barrell around another blind corner, OH DOUBLE PHOOKIN 'ELL, more bloody cows - right to left this time! this was the one where the 'brown' came close. :neenaw:

This time it was even closer, still, at least the brakes had a good workout!

Farming problems~~

Was a case last week in Derbyshire were a farmer had tied twine between two trees ACROSS the road

Apparently the farmer had done this to stop the cattle roaming.

Geezer on a bike slowed from 60mph [in a 60mph limit] to 20 mph as he saw the cattle crossing the road.

However didn't see the twine

Ended up in hospital with a badly slit throat as it "got him" just under the helmet [so to speak]

What would have been the outcome at 60mph??

Farmer merely got "slap wrists" from plod!!

Well Bert, if it's of any use, back in 1978 I used to be based in the Weston Super Mare area, and a few of us lads would use about a 150 yard stretch of private farm track, (actually it was National Trust land or something, and the farmer had right of access, but it wasn't his land) to get to a local watering hole.

Farmer strung up a wire across the road to stop his cattle from exploring the delights of the National Trust Land.

Alan lost his head completley when he hit it at about 35 mph.

Farmer got something like 21 days community service for "preventing lawful access" or something. What happened to "manslaughter" we wanted to know. There were no warning signs etc. Alan left a wife and unborn child.

Makes you wonder about "justice".
