black gunk in front of chain

just got a blackbird, noticed loads black oily gunk in compartment at side of gear pedal in front of chain. cleaned it all up but any idea the cause? is it the chain oil? any ideas?

I'd say it is chain lube as well. Sounds like someone has over done it. Check you haven't got it all over the rear tyre. Welcome to the mad house and be ready to accept favours of a sweet nature.

One mistake riders make is to lube the chain before a ride which means it is still fairly fluid when you ride off thus giving you more 'fling'.
Try lubing after a run when the chain is warm letting the lube to penetrate that bit better. When you next ride the bike the spray will have set giving less fling off.

if there is a lot, get the spocket cover off scrape it out clean everything up. Including the clutch push rod, has been know to stick and give grief.
