'Bird engine casing - aluminium or magnesium

It seems when I was taken out by white van man in March, the lower right fairing mounting point got knocked off the engine casing. I guess it's just where the knock on the fairing happened as I can't see any damage at all elsewhere.

There's nothing I can do on the insurance now as it was so long ago and it's only recently I've had all the fairings off to find it.

Can it be welded back on? Is it aluminium or magnesium? I expect the former.

The peace seems to match up ok so I'm hoping a couple of little dabs will do. To be honest the fairings all seem rock solid without if being attached anyway....or of course I could knock up a bracket and fit it onto another bolt down there.

Thoughts?

Alloy mix not pure aluminium. There are some good metal to metal adhesives/fillers about now-a-days.. might work.

You could have it ally mig welded, depending on where its broken off. You used to have to heat ally to weld it, don't know if it can be done cold in todays world.

Might pay to ask someone who does car wheel refurbishment..

Picture please of broken section.

Thanks. That's what I thought. Alloy mix for the lightness and the strength.

I've found a guy recommended on a local bike forum who's going to take a look on Saturday.

This is a VERY common problem and fortunately one that is not too hard to solve at little or no cost @tu*
Make of a wee L bracket and bolt it to a couple of the other sump bolts take a nut on the back and its job done ( fiddly mind you ! )
Hopefully your man will be able to sort you out but do make sure he knows that is the sump !

just for info Aluminium is ok to weld from cold , you have to heat Cast up before you weld it to stop it cracking, @tu*

Here's another alternative.
When I'm rebuilding the Ossa Trials bikes, clutch covers and chain guards are more often found to be split, this does the job easily.
I also repaired a seam weld on an alloy tank with it, and repaired a broken thread on a crankcase.
Practice on a piece of ally first.@tu*

You need to use mapgas as propane is not hot enough.(Available from plumbers merchants)

I have used durafix rods with considerable success.
Really great product and VERY easy to use
Can highly recommend it @tu*

The man, he say no.

Well not entirely. Remove the sump and he can do it.

He wouldn't do it on the bike due to the heat spread especially since it's close to the gasket etc. So if I ever have headers and sump off I'll it done .... which ain't gonna happen.

I'll probably try JB Weld (two part "glue") and if that's no good then I'll knock up a bracket and attach via a bolt somewhere.

Jaws - you say it's very common. What's the common fix? Is it common enough for a standard bracket to be produced?

Clueless in most things
I've used jb weld, and similar products on various metals, tends to work okay. Last time I used it was on the wrought iron bed when the mrs snapped a few downrods off grabbing them in a momment of passion..1996 I think it was.

Failing that as Jaws says, use the ild meccano strip/right angle from a further point and take it to where you need it
