Big green balls

That's got FB's attention. I just got back from a trip to Dover and riding back through Gloucestershire and Herefodshire I noticed a lot of trees with large green ball shaped growths in the branches. The trees had lost their leaves but these balls were still green. Is it some parasite growth like peeps kiss under at Christmas? Any green fingered experts? :dunno:

We have big green balls all over the garden.. Mo is a bit of a bird fanatic and uses them for feeders..
This is one of our fence panels :p ( the big green balls are arrowed )

I think the birds will find them without the arrows, they do in our garden anyway
