Governments across Europe are taking action to curb fuel costs amid sporadic protests about rising petrol prices.
France is to offer fuel tax rebates to farmers while President Jacques Chirac has called on petrol retailers to make meaningful cuts to pump prices.

Retailers have cut prices in Austria after the government threatened a one-off tax on their profits.

Belgium, Poland and Hungary have also announced measures to cushion the impact of rising prices on consumers.
EU countries have come under pressure to control fuel costs amid a clamour for action from hauliers, farmers and motoring groups.

The French government announced a package of measures on Tuesday designed to ease the situation for farmers.

They will be offered tax breaks and refunds on fuel worth about 30m euros ($36.6m; ?20.2m).

"The rise in fuel prices penalises farms, which cannot always pass the cost on," Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin told a meeting of farmers in Rennes.

"We must help them."

Similar financial assistance was announced for hauliers on Monday.

Farmers unions have said that they would study any government proposals before deciding whether to step up direct action.

French President Jacques Chirac urged ministers on Tuesday to put pressure on petrol retailers to cut pump prices further.

Austrian Chancellor Schuessel said fuel prices were far too high

BP and Total announced price cuts last week but consumer and motoring groups said they have not gone far enough.

A spokesman for President Chirac said that he had asked finance minister Thierry Breton to urge "companies to commit themselves rapidly and wholeheartedly to invest in non-polluting energy and step up the pace of price cuts at the pump".

Tax threat

Petrol prices are to come down in Austria with BP and Austrian retailer OEMV announcing cuts of 3 cents and 2 cents per litre respectively.

Vienna had threatened to impose a windfall tax on the profits of leading petrol companies although the firms concerned said their decision was unconnected to the proposed measure.

A BP spokesman in Austria said it had been able to cut prices because wholesale gasoline prices had fallen.

The Polish and Hungarian governments have pledged to reduce excise and VAT duties on petrol while the Belgian government says it will reimburse VAT payments on home heating fuel.

Speaking at the Frankfurt motor show, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said rising fuel prices were "certainly worrying".

The British government has ruled out any direct action over fuel costs.

Chancellor Gordon Brown ruled out cuts to fuel duties, instead urging Opec members to boost production and invest in new refineries.

Wouldnt ya fekin know every country in Europe is trying to reduce fuel costs except the twats in power in the UK :shooter:

Just wondering......

What is the cost of petrol now in the UK??

Here in Dubai, the Government have allowed the oil companies to raise the price of fuel from (Dirhams) AED4.75 per Imperial gallon to AED6.25 per gallon...... This came into effect 2 weeks ago..........

The rate of exchange is roughly AED6.5 to GBP1.00

So that would make one litre of fuel about GBP0.20

They say that fuel will go to AED8.90 per gallon by the end of 2006, so that would make it GBP0.285 per litre....

The only reason it's so cheap here is that there is no tax on fuel. So it just goes to show what you actually pay for the fuel in the uk, and then the taxes...

trouble is....

that while the consumers just moan and do chuff all about it, the chancellor is hardly likely to do anything about it.....think of just how much extra wedge he is creaming off us now ?? He is laughing all the way to the bank......what do we do - panic buy and fill up....doh....c7u8

It's a phookin joke, there is no alternative public transport infrastructure, the price of juice will not go back down to what the public believe is a sensible level so what can we do ? Vote with our feet and do everythign possibel to show Blair and his bunch of useless cronies that we decide what's best and make his life a feckin misery....

Do you honestly think a change of government will make a difference?

The Chancellor laughing all the way to the bank? It's not his money, it's mine and yours that goes into better education, hospitals etc

The moaning farmers who have been the most heavilly subsidised workers (by us tax payers) since the 2d WW should realise how lucky they are.

Stop the subsidies to them and let them compete in the real market place.

The haulage industry, owner drivers, small firms are the masters of their own destiny. There are just too many haulage contractors, which means they all try to undercut each other. Too much competition drives the haulage prices down to a level where small trucking companies are operating at a loss.
It is poor business acumen of the trucking companies.
There are just too many lorries chasing too few jobs.

If you canot stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.
Change jobs. We all have had to at some stage.

Blockading is not the answer, Nobody should be stopped from going about their legitimate business by bullies.

Regarding the cost of motoring, all of europe is roughly on a par. Some countries have higher fuel duty, but lower license fees and no toll roads.
Other countries have lower fuel costs but higher license fees and pay tolls.

The moaning farmers and truckers should concentrate on working and if they cannot compete then get out of the industry and get another job.

Don't penalise the rest of us!

Emirates hikes fuel surcharge, more to follow
By Patrick Michael (Deputy Editor)

6 September 2005

DUBAI ? Taking the cue from Thai Airways, other airlines too have jumped on to the bandwagon and announced an increase in fuel surcharge yesterday.

Emirates airline yesterday announced that they too would be slapping a fuel surcharge on passengers. The award-winning airline will start applying additional fuel surcharges on tickets issued in Dubai, effective September 14. For all Emirates destinations, there will be a fuel surcharge of Dh160 for one-way and Dh320 for return trips, the only exceptions being Amman, Beirut and Dammam which will be Dh130 for one way and Dh250 on return fares, Emirates airline said in a statement issued to your favourite No. 1 newspaper, Khaleej Times.

Interesting to note that, despite of the astronomical price of petrol, nobody - the media who could make it known to the public, the people who could use it, the environmental organisations who could publicise it, the government who could lose billions due to it... and the people on this very forum who moan about the price of petrol - nobody seems to be interested in the Pantone engine (link to post re. Pantone engine HERE and HERE)... interesting.

Yeah....... I saw that in our paper yesterday (or was it the day before??)..

There ain't no such thing as a tax free Dubai anymore...... they are slowly hitting us with 'hidden' taxes by calling them 'fees and levies' etc...

I note that you say 'no democracy, no human rights...' Yeah well, I still think this place is better than most in that it's a pretty benelovent autocracy - considering it's an Arab state! We westerners are left to our own devices here and do pretty much what we want, when we want. Just so long as you don't step outside the boundaries, you're ok. It's so much more open than Saudi etc.... The only place that's more open would be Lebanon - a place which I thoroughly enjoy when I visit there.

At least we don't have the PC crowd making our lives a misery - something which I see most of the UK public moan about....

Never said a change of government would be any different.....I am inferring that it's about time the needs of the people were looked after.

LMAO Roxxo...our Money ?? Funny.....I'm glad you're happy to pay politicians and their wives to live the life of royalty by funding 2 homes, their partners employed and paid expenses - chuffin outrageous.....lavish banquets and hotels, plush cars. These wasters could not cut it in the real world so they sit and debate dross all day thinking they know what we want.....utter friggin tosh...hospitals full of managers and not enough do-ers, too much beaurocracy and processes and not enough focus on the core needs....same with anything the government (whoever they are) touch....

What about the elderly in this country ? How do we treat them ? Imagine the quality of life we could give them if we stop paying politicians the extortionate salaries and expenses we do ?

Who's to blame for the farmers ? We are - the very people that support large corporate supermarkets that dictate pricing to the farmer - half of my family are farmers and I see it first hand. Supermarkets care about quality ??!!!! Funny as phook.....

This is regurgitated tabloid nonesense.
If you actually look at the costs of government which are open to scrutiny you will find that the UK governments over the years stand up well compared to other countries.
There are more doers now than ever before but they have to be managed. If it wasn't for the public demanding figures on this, targets for that, show us where the money is being spent, independant accounts etc, there wouldn't be so much bureaucracy, but that is not realistic.
If you really think you could do better, put yourself up to be an MP.
It is so easy to critcise but to come up with credible alternatves is very difficult.

I don't mean to be arguementative S and Q, we all have different opinions and you are quite entitled to yours but I have a downer on journalism, tabloid especially. Unfortunately most of us, the great unwashed, lap up distorted tabloid headlines and repeat editorial opinions as fact.

The elderly are very, very well treated. My widowed mother cannot believe how well she is treated with her pension and help from different departments. She has had numerous spells in hospital and now when attending the outpatients clinic, a car picks her up at the door, takes her there and brings her home. Free of charge. I could state many examples of how well they are looked after.

Don't disagree but things are changing with "farmers markets" , well, in our area but in large conurbations people want cheap, easily accessible food.

Farmers eventually will have government subsidies removed and then they will have to fend for themselves in the open market. Some will go to the wall, but that's life. It has happened in other industries throughout the 20th century. Nothing stays the same.
In New Zealand, government subsidies were removed all together a few years back. There were years of turmoil and there are fewer farmers now but they are making a decent living, providing produce that people want.

hear what you're saying Rox

but farmers markets are purely so snobby 4 wheel drive buggy drivers can go and purchase some nice sausages.....they aren't real money spinners !!!!!

Supermarkets are supported well by lazy peeps that can't be arsed to pay that extra and go to the local butcher or grocer....it's all too convenient....

When I witnessed first hand how my father was treated with terminal cancer in the UK it belies belief - our NHS is a bloody disgrace...I for one woudl pay more to see it on a par with other EU countries....

Regardless of the costs associated with our government (or any government come to mention it) they may be minor but I'd love to see what could be funded/supported with that wedge !!!!!!

Cheers for the debate matey, seriously brightened up an otherwise dull afternoon at work !!

S and Q

We are quite fortunate. I don't mind paying for quality and 3 miles away from us is a fantastic pig farmer that sells all "home" produce. He sells products that are grown or raised locally in North Lincolnshire and it is all certified as such. Yes you pay a premium and I know a lot of people cannot afford or are not willing to pay a little extra but thare have been some changes for the good around here.

I came off nights this morning.
Lovely day today.
Day off tomorrow but the weather looks to be atrocious.
C'est la vie !

3 work colleagues and myself will be near Buxton, trail riding. We are on an organised "do" with a company called Overland Trail Tours. We are staying overnight tonight and then we will have a full day off roading tomorrow. You only need your own helmet, the bikes and all the gear are provided.
I have a XR250 that I do a bit of green laning on but I have never been up in the rocky hills of Derbyshire/Cheshire. Really looking forward to it.
Just waiting for the guys to pick me up now.

Roxxo, I can't disagree with you more. This government treats everybody like shit, rips off everybody, for the benefit of few, not giving a single flying fuck about the common mock like you or me, and that's a fact. In fact, this government is the scum of the earth, lying, cheating stealing bastards.
