Maths was never my strongest subject at school...but I am pretty sure that in order to get
an average you need at least 2 values ,or numbers,or results or whatever before the
average can be worked out.
So why do so many people jump on the brakes in their cars when they see an
"average speed camera" sign... when the first camera gantry is half a mile away.
HALFWITS!!!!!
We now have these cameras on a stretch of the A500 which is one of the main
trunk routes in North Staffs...I wouldnt be surprised if they cause more accidents
than before they were installed..

You'll no doubt see people slow down for the camera, then speed up again until the next camera.

Are you fishing? If not.......

Distance divided by time to give an average speed, not an average of the recorded speeds at the two cameras.
For example if the cameras are half a mile apart and it takes you 30 seconds to pass between them then the cameras know you have AVERAGED 60 mph.

The point that I was trying to make was that people are jumping on the brakes as soon as they see the sign for average speed cameras even though they havnt yet passed one camera..so the time between cameras doesn't yet come into play...

It's simple - many, many drivers are half asleep.

There has been a huge chunk of the M23 subject to average speed cameras for 50mph for two or three years while widening takes place - there are numerous warning signs well in advance, Sussex plod released the figures for number of tickets issued and it was and remains staggeringly high.

The old A14 near Huntingdon was covered by average speed cameras, I used to drive that stretch regularly and use cruise control set at 70mph (by my satnav) and it was amazing how many cars used to go past me, mostly BMWs Mercedes and Audis, then you'd see the brake lights coming on in the distance as they approached another camera.

There's a 50 mph road in Northampton which has average speed cameras and the number of cars that speed along it is staggering, they then break hard when they see the overhead cameras at the end of the road,

I know it well, I used to live not far from there, in Gt. Billing & used that particular stretch of road commuting most days. Saw quite a few accidents caused by people braking too hard in wet conditions - accidents on that road were a weekly event.

This might well be very controversial...

But............

Just maybe they're slowing down because the speed limit has changed.

The average speed warnings I've seen normally start either at or after the speed limit changes.

The cameras are usually positioned some way after the new limit.

So...... You're complaining because they're slowing g to the limit?

I agree to a point but anyone that needs to use their brakes to slow down when a speed limit changes is generally not paying enough attention or reading the road.

Thee are also plenty of twats who ignore the new reduced speed limit as they know the first camera is a long way down the road - on the M23 example I used it must be a good mile or more after the new limit.
